Quiet Exhaust

So what's the quietest exhuast? I've looked at Silencers. I want QUIET as possible, I know it won't sound stock I KNOW THAT! What about dual tip?> I want performance! So what's the best of both worlds?

id proboly go 2.5 catback with a stock muffler maybe a 02 newer muffler would be better performance because of the bigger engine and still sound stock your not going to loose but maybe 1 or 2 hp buy not going straight through loud style so it wont really matter im not even going to do cat back because it probobly has the worst hp to $ ratio

so your saying a 02 newer muffler would help???? Also I'd only lose 1-2 hp, what about other mods, wouldn't that lose more? also what about silencers?

silencers just merely muffles the sound of a straight through muffler. my magnaflow is pretty loud but with the silencer in it, it quiets it down pretty well. But even with the silencer, there's still a slight drone.

im saying you could go with the 2.5in cat back with stock max muffler and only be maybe 1or2 hp below what 2.5 catback with loud mufler would be so lets say greddy is worth 5hp your 2.5in with stock muffler would only gain 3 or 4hp but upgrading the piping is where the gain is at, not in the muffler

Don't forget to make sure that cat back you decide on has as long of a resonator as possible and that will help keep noise down....

When making an exhaust system change, you've got approach it with the understanding than the Quietest exhaust is going to be Stock. Nissan put a lot of engineering into it to get it that way, and individuals don't have the resources to duplicate that design level. To get better performance, you're going to be trading out parts of that "quietest design" for better performance. Some of these tradeoffs are better than others.

For an exhaust mod, you'll get the biggest performance increase out of a aftermarket Y-pipe (Warpspeed, Catman, ect) and that will be quietest with an otherwise all stock exhaust or the equivalent. Hi-Flow Cat and catback will give a little more performance, but that's at the low bang for the buck level and also probably the worst tradeoff for noise. As far as catbacks, the bigger the pipe the more the noise. The stock 'B' pipe from my '90 SE measured 1-7/8" to 1-15/16" OD.

For mufflers, the 2000-2003 Maxima variable flow will be the quietest, but the most restrictive. The next step will be mufflers like the Flowmaster 50 series SUV or the Dynamax Super Turbo, but they will be a little louder. Any muffler change only makes sense if you're going to do the Y-pipe later, otherwise you'll get little performance out of them (or any catback for that matter). The biggest exhaust restriction in the 3rd Gen Maxima is the Y-pipe.

Performance exhausts almost always increase noise levels to some degree, but if you want to cobble together something custom, try to think BIG in terms of mufflers, and avoid straight-through mufflers. Large mufflers and resonators will help soak up more sound.

Call up warpspeed, get a y pipe, b pipe with the longest resonator they have, and a 5th gen muffler.. Should be a quiet yet powerful set up.
