Am I Getting a Good Price on a Tranny Fix?

Hey,

new to the forum, and new to cars as well... my max was given to me this past july, and had 270k KM on the Odometer...

-In the last couple of weeks an oil leak started, just one drip every couple of days... then it got worse, so i decided to take it to my mechanic.

-He said it was the front main oil seal (I think) on my tranny, and that in order to reseal it my tanny needed to be taken out. I said OK. He quoted me $350 CDN for labour and parts - plus a transmission flush.

-Howver, 2 days later and Im going to pick it up and he is now quoting me $490 - I asked why,and he said it covers the resealing of 4 seals (1 the one i saw + 3 that needed resealing), and the tranny flush.

Bottom line - am I getting ripped off for payin $490 for a tranny flush and the resealing of 4 seals?

Thanks in advance,

that's a little steep, but pulling an auto tranny isn't fun at all. that's about 5-6 hours of work, which comes out about right if you factor $60US /hr for work.

it takes 2 to pull the tranny, and 2 to put it back in. that leaves an hour or two to replace all the seals, flush the tranny, and put all the other parts back on.

well I guess if it did take 6 hours of work (in the worst case) @ $60USD/hour it comes out to $360 USD - but $360 USD was the total, which included parts... so I guess that's about average right? (as you can see I'm just trying to make myself feel better about having to blow that much on an oil leak )

yeah.. it sucks, but if you can't do the work yourself, there's not a lot you can do.
If he had to pull the tranny, you certainly didn't get ripped off. you might have been able to get it cheaper elsewhere, but you didn't get ripped off by any means.

Well thanks for the prompt replies, he's a great mechanic, and usually charges very little for labour, so I was just shocked to hear him say that price - but then again most of my repairs have been minor, so conversley I've never had to pay this much. Thanks again.
