my brakes squeak sometimes when i am go to stop. i took my car in to get the brakes checked and the mecanic told me that that was a common problem with early 90's model nissan and honda and that my brakes were perfect. it doesn't do it every time, but it's pretty annoying when it does. i find it hard to believe that they are perfect. does anyone else have this problem?

Hi,

I have a 1989 Maxima SE. I too have squeaky brakes. It is the worst when I am backing up. I went to my mechanic and explained the problem, he told me that I should look into getting the rotors cut, maybe even replace. I think that is why they squeal. I hope I was of some help.

did you put PBC grease on the shims and pad pins?

Turning the rotors will only stop the problem for a short time. the problem is that the pads get glazed over and squeal... often, the shims and anti-squeal stuff on the brakes either aren't applied correctly, or none at all.
check them out and see if that stuff was done correctly, and if not, do that before spending money needlessly turning or replacing your rotors.

BTW.. mine squeak like a school bus.. damn metallic pads.

mine squeak too...

I am sure its because I have't had the rotors cut... First they were started squealing like crazy in regular driving.. I checked the pads and I saw that they were almost gone. So I installed the new pads, put the blue anti squeal stuff on the shims, they were gripping crazy hard for the first 100 or so miles, then I broke them in and they started squealing occasionally while braking... Now they do it a lot when I am just about to come to a stop or to start driving again, its not even a squeal its more of a rubbing sound.. Again, I didn't have the rotors resurfaced after I put the new pads in, I'm sure thats why its like that. There is all kinds of Anti-squeal stuff you can buy at local auto supplies stores, you may want to try that. I learned to live with it, since I can't even hear it much because my stereo is on 24/7
