Tranny Failure (Misisng 1st gear)

For a whiel now my trany has been starting in second gear and now over revs and really doesent move anywhere...I was thinking about buying a re-built trany from kragen with a 35,000 mile warranty, or buying a used trany and installing it myself...I also considered going to trany shop but they charged 2,500...I got a 92 Maxima GXE Automatic...has anyone had this same problem? Howd you fix it? and what might the problem be? How can I fix it?

check the smaller shops around you and see if anywhere can do it for cheaper. I got mine done for 650 and it's perfect, although I have a manual and they are generally cheaper.

The problem is I know a few shops and the problem with them, yes their cheaper, but around my area the've been doing terrible jobs...I had a 91 Mazda 626 i got fixed twice, a 86 Corolla I also got fixed and both times from diffrent shops had to get it fixed...Im kinda skeptackle on 16000 for a re-built trany thou...I jsut gotta think about what is more economically, but more importantly what would be better for my "Maxipad" like my friend call it...

thats the motor, he want help with the trans. sounds to me the tranny needs an overhaul. the bands and clutches most likely need replacing and missing first gear sounds like quite an annoying problem. I have a manual so i dont have to worry about these problems. but my 89 trans am eventually needed an overhaul. cost was 1900 and that was for a full blown race conversion. torque converter and all. However im not sure if foreign parts and more expensive. to make a long story short get a few prices for a rebuild. then look for prices on a new tranny. but beware junkyard trannys may need a rebuild too. to be careful. make sure you can return it.
