Who should replace my water pump?

Hello Forum, I have water leaking from the water pump area (93 MaxSE, 217000mi, Auto) and was told by the Nissan Dealer that I needed a water pump, and the est. on the work was around $800. Is it a repair that needs to be done by the dealer, or can a franchised tire/auto repair place do the repair, and if so, what is reasonable to pay for the repair?

Thanks!

I'll do it for $600, including all parts

Without a break, it took me maybe an hour combined for removal/install, parts were $100-$125ish IIRC for a brand new pump w/lifetime warrenty. If you dont want to do the work yourself, I would find a mechanic in the area and see what his prices are. Also alot of gas stations have shops and will do work like this.

Yeah.... are you including plane tickets with that price quote?? I can see you flying from WA all the way to MD to do that.

It's not too hard of a job to do, if you're doing it on your own. But I'd follow what MrGone just said.

I don't know where you guys are getting your labor charges from. I replaced my water pump about a month ago and my regular mechanic only charged me $350 and that included parts, labor, and taxes. You can surely find a place to do it for less than $600 somewhere if you don't wanna do it yourself.

I found a good "shade tree" type mechanic to do the work for $150. Most decent mechanics can do a water pump without much problem.

I did buy all of the parts. Pump was like $125 and the belts were around $30. Be sure to have all three belts replaced, since they need to be removed to do the work, anyway.

BTW - if anyone needs a water pump core I have one still. I bought a new pump (not reman.) and on new ones, they didn't want the core back for some reason.

Labor rates vary widely from place to place.
I saw one chevy dealer out in Iowa(?) that was $45 an hour
My local mechanic in the other hand is $85 with the dealer being $105

Thanks for the feedback, at least I know I don't have to pay $800 and that the the job is simple enough for me to do...if I was mechanically inclined. I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

Why do you need a phone? (well and I didnt need any books, but we'll leave that out of it).

Smart man. If I were to pay for all the maintence/other crap done to my car, I would have never bought it, as it would be totaled. Hell once I get done with the suspension work and one or two performance parts I will be pushing the KBB value for total investment in the car. Labor for all my stuff would probably be around $2000-$3000 dollars now.
