shifting shaft problem!

I had a 92 auto SE 5speed for 2 years when I first came to USA. I don't know much of car. Everything went perfect until recently I noticed that when I put the driving shaft at D gear, it won't move until I tried several times. I tried other gears(R, 1 and 2), they are ok. Who has any opinion of what problem?

I had a similar problem - wouldn't go into drive until I moved selector into 2 first. Problem is likely to be the selector-to-cable bush - a piece of plastic that wears out (mine had disintegrated). At the bottom of the selector rod is a pin. The selector cable attaches to the pin & the bush is both a spacer and bearing. Bush & cable is held in place by washer & split pin.
You need to jack car up, put it on axle stands, remove the heat shield & replace the bush - it's a 15 min job.
A new selector bush shouldn't cost much (I got mine off a wreck so it cost me nothing).
