Intermittent Starting Issues - F@#%!!

Well guys...I haven't been around for awhile because I've been fixing my car every chance i get some spare time. I've fixed a lot of things lately and the car is running pretty good. But here's my latest PITA problem.

This is a little long, so go fill up your coffee.

Last week i started to have problems starting the car. I'd turn the key over and everything would get power except for the starter. Of course this doesn't happen everytime i start the car. it will happen maybe 1 out of five starts. So unfortunately it's that much harder to diagnos.
Like a dummy i went out and bought a rebuilt starter w/solenoid the minute the problem arose. Of course the car started fine at first but my problem came back.
So far I've tested the power wires from the starter and they are fine. The ground is fine as well.
There are two wires from the starter relay which I haven't tested yet but will tomorrow. One goes to the positive battery terminal and the other connects to the small power wire coming for the starter.
I'm thinking that the connection to the positive terminal from the starter relay wire might be weak. So i'm going to clean the terminal and make a new connection.
I also think that the relay could be malfunctioning too.
I know that the ignition is a possibility but i've never heard of an ignition having intermittent issues. it just dies.

Does anyone here have any ideas? Or any personal experience with their maxima on this subject?

There was a thread about a week ago on this topic.
It boiled down to being a neutral safety switch If I remember correctly.

or so i thought....

it's not the god damn relay!!!
i think know that it's the connections to the starter relay under the relay box.

any suggestions?

You checked the NSS you said.
How did you check it?
Did you try to start it in neutral any of the times?
How about take it out of park and put it back in.
On mine I'm just slightly off so I have to start in neutral on occasion.

Exactly, once in a blue moon my car (auto) will not crank. I'll giggle the shifter then it cranks/starts. Our shifter bushing are known to wear which might cause a cranking problem, even though the neutral safety switch is working properly.

yeah i've tried starting it in neutral or taking it out of park and putting it back in park. none of that works for me.
i think what's happening is that there's a short in the wiring to the starter relay. because when i put in a new relay the car started about 10 times without a problem. then all of a sudden it won't start anymore. so i think the short in the wiring is shorting out the relay which inturn causes the car not to start.
if it's not that....it probably is the ignition

i replaced the power terminal connections but unfortunately that wasn't the issue either.

this fu&k!n sucks!!!

Sounds like its time to do a bypass.
You could always getto it like I did my elky years back.
Toggle switch under the dash.
Problem solved!

I hope you use a momentary switch not a toogle. I used the toggle because I had it lying around. bad idea though good for cold weather long cranks though

do you mean using a push button switch as opposed to a toggle switch?
if i were to use a button it would be the push botton type.
but right now i'm just touching the wires together.

i just might get the start button because its cheaper than replacing the ignition and will substitue for it.

besides i'd be lying if i said i didn't find the start buttons a little cool.
