Tranny problems.....?
Tranny problems.....?
Alrighty, on my way home the other day I stopped at the mail box to pick up the mail. I get back in the car, put it in gear but when I try giving it gas, the car jumped forward a few feet and made a bunch of clunking noises. I was able to drive the car down the driveway to my house after a few tries, but it was making a loud whirring noise. After getting it home, I tried moving it into the garage but it wouldn't move at all (just kept jumping forwards a few inches when giving it gas). This sounds like a major tranny problem, but my question to all of you is, could this possibly be one of the universal joints?

On our cars there's a c-type clip that meshes into a groove on the driveshafts (both pass and driver side). Sometimes this groove wears out and the c clip no longer holds the drive axle in place. The axle then begins to work it's way out of the transaxle just enough to not engage the drive gears. Result is that your car doesn't go anymore. Mine did this a few years ago, made clunking sounds but wouldn't drive the car. The fix is to replace the drive axle. You can try pushing on each fender to bounce the car up and down - sometimes this will force the axle back into the transaxle enough to work again. This is what my car did - it'd work fine then I'd hit a bump and the shaft would move out and the car wouldn't drive. I'd get out and bounce the drivers side fender up and down a few times and I could usually get it to go again. good luck
