3rd gen VS 4th Gen

3rd gen VS 4th Gen
It looks like I'm going to be getting another max but this time a 4th gen.
I'm gonna have to decide which one I'll drive and which one she'll drive.
I haven't really started to mod my 3rd gen, yet. but if I get this 4th gen I know that it has more readily avialable mods.
Anyone have any suggestions for me as to what to do?
BTW I'm not getting rid of the 3rd gen (unless someone makes me an offer I can't refuse)

I think the VE has more potential than the VQ, but then I'm neurotic too according to eric (MaxiMan)

the 4th gen is more of a girlie car I think, the 3rd gen is sport with luxury added (added well though) and the 4th gen is more of a low-end luxury with a nice motor...I would stick with the 3rd

hehe, owning both and I can safely say the 4th gen is definitely more luxurious, in any trim. It's also faster and much better for "sedan" type driving.
The cab isn't as quiet but it's also lighter with the VQ. 4th gen definitely aint a girly car, more of a man's car, and the 3rd is an enthusiast's car. Although I drive a 96 now I love seeing a well kept 3rd gen on the road. Only reason to own a 3rd gen now is either because it's cheap or because you love the styling.
I'd leave the 3rd gen to your girl since it's A/T. Females are usually much better on the RPM's than men are, your drivetrain will be thankful.
Do what I did and get yourself a nice 95-96se 5spd. Maybe since it's stick your woman won't like to drive it.

And for the record the 3rd gen has more soul hands down. The 4th gen feels empty and not as friendly.

I absolutely love the 3rd gen styling, comfort, feel etc... If you just want to look classy, stick with the third gen. I would say, however, that the 97 is the way to go. 5spd vs. auto...need I say more? You also start with more torque, less weight, and a newer engine. Even if the miles were the same it's still five years newer. This will make a difference in current and long term performance.

A VQ 5spd would be very hard to say no to. No VTC issues, more readily available power adders, and more readily available suspension parts.
On the other hand, if you are not planning to modify your next Maxima, I would find an excellent condition VE 5spd. They are of better build quality, just as fast a VQ stock for stock, and they look better.

A moded 4th gen is like Nissan version of the Civic, everyone has one. They make everything for it and its hard to be unique because so many people have them already. I only like them because of the supercharger you can drop in.

Stealth is everything
Image is nothing!

if the leather is the only thing wrong with it, just buy it. If the wife doesnt like it sell it for profit and use the money on the 3rd gen and christmas presents.

funny thing, I've always had a spare car (or two, or three) avaliable since I was 16.

I had a chance few days ago to get a 4th gen SE. After testdriving it, I realized that a true maxima enthusiast would prefer 3rd gen anytime. Who's out for a solid aftermarket support goes for the 4th gen, no question, but the ones who value suspension, robustness, build quality, intangibles, and sentimental things will choose the 3rd gen. It's not even the matter of affordability anymore, it's simply a 3rd gen thing.

Couldn't agree more with the stuff about the 3rd gen...
Also having both, the only real benefit I feel is in the engine of the VQ, other than that, I'll take a 3rd gen anyday...

My mom has a 97' SE a/t. And since mine is a 3rd gen a/t I can make a good enough comparison. I actually was driving her 4'th gen for a long time and when I decided to get my own car, I wanted a maxima. Seeing how affordable things were, I noticed that a 3rd gen would suffice. I test drove it, and knew that I had to get it. It just feels like a tighter car in comparison to the 4'th.
I do, however, like the 4'th gen power and styling, although, if I had to chose which i'd rather drive everyday, it'd be the 3rd gen hands down.
Teach her to drive stick, and then switch off and drive both.

you said you wanted to mod. That usually means you care about performance, stick is the best way to go unless you just HAVE to have an auto. Everyone's different but if you want the best performance and longevity outta your Max go 5spd!
I had to get rid of my 3rd gen because the auto gave out.

True!! If you want to have a performance car get a 5spd. When you mod out automatics the increase in hp adds too much strain on the tranny, they don't usually last too long with heavy moding. You may get a good 50-75 horses added before the tranny will need some TLC

I really like the styling of both, but haven't drove a 4th gen, so don't have a right to comment on performance. All I know is that I wouldn't mind haveing the VQ engine in a 3rd gen body. Stupid VTC's.
