left axle removal

has anyone here removed the left axle w/out removing the right side first?it says in chiltons that the right side must be removed first then you must drive out the left side through the transaxle from the right side.has anyone tried to remove the left w/out doing this.by the way it says this must be done on autos, not manuals.any auto guys out there do this?let me know thanks

Bah.. they're full of crap.
just drain the tranny fluid, unbolt the bottom ball joint, unbolt axle nut (before the ball joint), swing the hub and spindle out of the way, then grab onto the axle and yank it out.

I have a question:
When I replaced my driver's axle (92SE VSLD), no tranny fluid came out. I tried to remove the speedo cable to check the level, but the plastic part cracked, so I just bolted it back. The car drives fine, but I've had a crazy speedo (bounces up and down) even before the axle change (and the odometer reads less miles than traveled). Please help!

speed sensor is prolly fubar'd on yours, and you may be low on fluid.
park the car on level ground and pull out the fill plug on the front of the tranny. fluid should drip out. if not, then you need to add fluid.

on the autos at least, you had to drain the fluid, otherwise it would pour out of the axle hole.. I'm not sure if you do on the 5 spds or not, but I always drain it anyway.
