Power Steering Hose and Whinning Noise

Hi,

I replaced my power steering hose - which had been badly for almost 2 months today.

However, the car still makes the familiar whinning when the engine is idling and it gets worse as I accelerate.

The mechanic indicated that the noise is probably related to the fact that it had leaked so badly, and that it is not likely to go away.

Could this be right....? Any thoughts?

Jeff's probably right...pumps don't like running without fluid for very long...

Did they flush the system too?
If they didn't you may be buying more than just a pump

thanks for your responses ...

sorrry about my ignorance but if you claim the pump went tittiees up - what does that mean... and is there anyway i can find out if indeed the ******* are up?

is it routine to flush the system too.... or it is up to the discretion of the mechanic; how expensive is it to flush the system?

cheers - Noela

It means it's dead, gone with the wind, **** down into the ground, 6 feet under, swimming with the fishes etc....

You probably ran it low on fluid and burnt it up. Buy a rebuilt one and replace it.

Mechanics discretion. ******* up means it failed or is going bad.

Thanks again, but then couldn't the mechanic have spotted this whiles changing the hose?

how expensive is it to fix (used parts and labor)?

and is this different from the rack (steering rack?) i hear the failed pump can affect the rack too.... is that right?

Not neccessarily.

yes this is different from the rack and if done incorrectly can kill a rack too.

thanks.. how expensive is to replace the pump, assuming i'm using a used/rebuilt part...

and how long can i wait to fix it... given that I may not keep the car for more than one more year - it is currrently at about 270K miles.

thanks -- ohh, so the type of pump depends on the motor used -- mine is a 91 GXE -- i understand these could have either an electronically controlled pump or a mechanical one. how does one know --

the parts section of maxima.org quotes abut 70 for the mechanical, and about 200 for the electronic ..ahhh !

thanks again - you've been a great help -- Noela
