Has anyone had work done by Cottman Transmission????
My tranny is starting to slip and make a noise when in reverse so it will probaly be needing a rebuild. I was planning to take my car to a Cottman transmission since its one like a block from my home. I wanted to know if anyone had their tranny rebuilt or any tranny work done there? How is their work, how is their warranty? Is it realistic to hope that I will be able to have it rebuilt for about $1500.
I'd just check the BBB on them first, to make sure there's no unresolved complaints. Even though they are technically a "chain", each one is run by separate owners. Pretty much the same thing with AAMCO, Budget, etc. One can be good, the other terrible. $1500 is about right for a rebuild. I paid $1800 for mine, and it took them about 3 days.
Guys,
I had my 1st tranny replaced after it started slipping at about 100K miles. It was $1,600 and done by a local guy "Dan's Transmission" that had a pretty good rep.
Well, it came back shifting screwy. I had to take it back for adjustments and it was OK (but never felt the same as the original, not as smooth).
About 150K the tranny went again. Dan said his warranty was one year or 12K miles, so no luck with that. I was PO'd about only getting 50K on that tranny that never seemed right to begin with so I took it to a Cottman because it was right next to where I worked.
Cottman took about a week. It came back to me with issues immediately. Shif timing was all whacked. It went back for another few days-- they said they had to order a part. It came back better, but still shifts SUPER hard when you put the petal down and shift at high RPMs (like passing someone around 50-60MPH). I took it back. They said they needed or order another part and they would call me when it came in. They never called. I finally gave up.
I am on the road a lot. I learned how to drive the car in such a way to avoid the hard shift (but I should not have to do this).
The car now has 217K on it, and just had brakes, struts, alignment, dist. cap, and manifold studs. I want it to last through the winter until at least March when I can afford to try and trade it in. I'm not putting a 3rd tranny in this car no matter how much I love it ;-)

well. about twelve years ago, i had a 1961 impala with a 2spd powerglide tranny and they totally f*Ked it up. probably was too old for them to understand. cannot say for newer trannys. but the powerglide is a general motors standard issue beast, ableit antique. so who knows. but i will not use them again. i can forgive, but i do not forget. maybe they have changed. someone on here says they are good.
rule of thumb: chain stores are always a single-bullet in the chamber game. have fun. its only a couple of thousand dollars.
