FYI: Changing the Light Bulb in the Ash Tray/Cigarette Lighter

My bulb that illuminates my ash tray recently blew, so I went to Radio Shack to find a replacement, they didn't have it. I then went to the dealer - they said that they did not sell those bulbs, but rather the whole metalic mounting piece... forget that. Time for a quick DYI...

After disassebling the ash tray assembly...

1) Goto Radio Shack, pick up a micro/mini lamp (with the 3/4" wire leads) that most resembles the size of the burnt out one (I got 6v 25ma).
2) Cut off that plastic piece that the old bulb used to mount on.
3) Splice those wires (x2) and the ones on your new bulb (x2), and then wrap the negative to the negative, and the positive to the positive.
4) Wrap up exposed wiring using electrical tape.
5) Plop it back into the old spot, and tape it down so it doesn't fly around.
6) Put the ash tray back.

This can also apply to the bulb on the cigarette lighter; after disassembling...

1) Same as above.
2) Then cut the plastic clip (harness type) that connected the wire to the bulb.
3) Toss out the black bulb holder that the old one used to sit in.
4) Splice the wires from the new bulb and join it with the wire, and solder the other end to the exterior casing that houses the actual lighter (I believe this one is the negative contact and the wire is the positive contact)
5) Tape the bulb (using electrical tape of course) to the old plastic housing (white in colour).
5) Reassemble.

It's a crude fix, but it works. Hope that helps.

I'm not familiar with these bulbs but if it is so hard to find 'em - I guess it would work fine but I wouldn't use a regular electrical tape but brush-on electrical type (so it would be a solid "construction").

True that... oh and one thing use the correct voltage (I believe they are both 12v bulbs - and the 6v one that I used lasted about 1 day) .
