I own a 2nd gen max and im thinking about getting a 3rd gen. I have a few questions
ok like the topic says i have an 87 maxima and i am thinking about joining the 3rd gen crowd, but theres a few questions, is there anything i need to look out for when looking at different maximas, whats the stock hp of a 3rd gen. Also how fast could i expect an auto maxima (3rd generation) to do 0-60, thanks

Are u on crack. j/k LOL get a 4th gen. 3rd gens have too many glitches like AUTO that dies at exactly 80K, VTC, exhaust studs. U can get a decent 4th gen for like $5K. u can get an even better one for like $6K

the vg is a pretty good engine, the ve is a pretty much better engine, 160 vs 190,
a 3rd gen is a great buy. i think it looks better than a 4th gen but not as good as a 5th gen. also, dont bother with an auto max unless you have to, the stick tranny is much better and lasts longer. pretty much read the faqs on the homepage, it tells you what you pretty much what to look for.

i have a VG 3rd gen, 5spd. it is modded. you can get those dirt cheap. like 2 grand. the VE engine is beefier and quicker, though. but is higher maintenance (VTCs). many gen3 people do not consider the VG version to be worth it. as for me, i have a project S14 underway so my horsepower wet dream lies there. and i like my VG SE; when modded is not bad. click on the www button and check out my cardomain site.
if you are going to get a 4th gen, then consider an S14 and mod that to the sky. after gen3, the soft-middle-aged crisis sets in to the maxima. but before i'm flamed for that, i do like how the 4th gen looks. especially modded, as that can be one awesome maxima. check out "baddest maximas on earth" galleries at:
http://www.nissanx.net/gall/albun23/135042_54_full1
that should result in an awesome 4th gen, one of my favorite looking ones.
i am partial to gen3, however, forevermore devout.

if you can find a vg 5sp, or a 89-91 SE, then the vg is worth it, with a few bolt ons (exhaust, cai) the car is pretty darn good for its age compared to other sedans of its time. but otherwise, do as im gonna do and just get a 92-94 se 5spd. then again if youre a luxury guy, get a gxe, you can find a pretty nice one for about 2 gs.

When you go looking at 3rd gens make sure you check for ticking VTC's, wore control arms, broken exhaust studs, and if its an auto tranny check for weird performance because they don't last very long after 100k. Go for the VE too, after you get into 3rd gens you'll understand why.

My dads 93 GXE had it since 16K, now 110K nothing but a couple of injectors.
My '89 GXE, 149K no major mechanical failure, a couple of injectors.
A friends car was wrecked at like 99K, a couple of injectors.
All the above cars are autos.
So yeah, some say the tranny is weak, but maintained it seems to have hled up for us. Injectors on the other hand....
I've spent like $1200 for injectors over the last couple of years...
But you couldn't convince me to give up my SE for a 4th gen. No way. Well, you could offer me like 10 large. Then I'd think about it...

the good thing with the vg is that it has a few less problems than the VE, its a dependable engine, since its been used in a bunch of cars before. then again the ve is much more pwerful. just take the car for a good test run first, if its an auto watch what rpms it shifts at, i know i have 130k on my auto and it is fairly nice, it has a small bump when shifting from first up to second, and at stop signs it doesnt like to go to first very easily. ive herd the ground wire kit from Matt93se clears this up. the stick shift tranny is almost indestructible.

Get a VE 5 speed you will love it. I own a 4th gen so dont let people sale you on them, the 3rd gen IS a better car overall and the VE's top end will decimate a VQ's.

I've had two 92 SE (VE engine) 5-speeds. The first one I bought with 60k and maintained it immaculately. Never had a VTC tick when I traded it in at 160k. My second one (current) was purchased by my brother with about 50k and I bought it from him with 140k (146k now) and the VTCs started ticking about 110k he said. He changed the oil regularly, but he drove it very hard. The VTCs are pretty bad now, but as far as I can tell, it hasn't had an effect on the car's performance. It is annoying, though. Eventually I will either fix them or buy a JDM engine, but that's a looong way down the road.
I know the history for both cars totalling almost 200k between them.
Here's what's been replaced on the current car: cruise control vacuum module (125k) water pump (143k), clutch pedal bracket (140k), LF window regulator (140k), y-pipe (145k) it had a leak, but it was just gaskets.
First max: clutch slave cylinder (120k apx). That's it. The car was like freaking new when I traded it in. I should have kept it, but I wanted better MPG, so I bought a 200SX SE. What an idiot I am...
So, my recommendation is for a VE 5-speed. If you can find one. I have never owned an Auto or VG, so I can't be honest in my opinions of either.

I have this same 'bump' on the 1-2 upshift (though no problem going into first at a stop) - are you saying that a ground wire kit may clear this up?

this is the link for the ground kit, im fixin on goin to him and having him put it on my car so heel have some pics of it.
http://www.mattblehm.com/engine.html
it says its nonexistent once the kit is on so lets hope

BTW the VE has way fewer injector problems than the VG
Although I've had to replace 4 of mine, But the last owner didn't maintain the car worth a sh|t so who knows what crap gas he was running or octane for that matter

Yeah, get a 4-gen, so not only can you break the autos, you get to break the 5-sp trannies too.
