Steering Boot Question

Would a ripped steering boot cause a flapping sound when under acceleration on in drive? I heard this flapping noise like it's a splash guard slapping the fenderwall but all my splash guards are fine and I noticed the steering boot is ripped on my drivers side? I'm guessin Imma have to get a new rack and pinion or would a boot kit do the trick ?

Check for any grease spots around the area first. This should at least tell you if any boot has been torn?

I see it when I look down into the back of the engine bay and I wanna cut it off IF it's making this loud slapping noise because it's so damn annoying and I cant friggin stand it !! I believe it's when it turns over so I'm trying to figure out if I get rid of it until my steering rack gets replaced would it cause permanent damage or would it be better to repair it till I get my new rack ? Oh by da way Balla thanx for replying

I'd say just leave it alone and wait until you get your new rack. That way when you put your new rack in, you know that everything is new and nothing is going to mess up?

why do you think you need to replace the rack?

when does this noise happen? you sure it's not leaking exhaust studs? I highly doubt the steering rack (or boot) would make noises like that, even if the boot was torn.

It only happens while the car is in drive. You can hear the rubber slapping something inside the engine bay. When you put the car in reverse you don't hear it though and when you look into the engine bay (rear drivers' side) you can see a severly ripped boot

that doesn't mean it's flapping per se...
try taping it down, zip tying it to the rack, something to hold it in place... if the noise goes away, then that's your problem.. but I don't think is it.

I agree with Matt...the rack boot isn't heavy enough to make that much noise, even if it were flapping around.

I'd have to agree with matt and broncoguy. The boot shouldnt be what's making the noise, and if it's torn, zip tie it temporarily if it will make you feel better

And Now Da Worrying Begins !!

Checked out the steering boot today and put the car in reverse..........no sound. Then my friend zip-tied and taped the steering boot. Rubbing sound is still there. Now I had my tranny rebuilt in September and the sound was there even before the tranny rebuild. I have the drivers' side axle replaced last month and the ball joints done in October. I can't figure it out !! Could it be the offset of my rims and the car settled from my lowered springs? I have 16x7 rims with a 40mm offset and Goodyear 205/55/16 tires. I have Eibachs that I put on in June and the noise didn't come around until like the end of July/beginning of August. Could it possibly be a wheel bearing because it has me stumped and now it's beginning to worry me BIGTIME !!
