How to remove cigarette lighter from dash trim panel?

I'm swapping out dash trim pieces...I got the switches out but can't for the life of me remove this damned cigarette lighter...

Tried the search, but gives me a "You do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:..."

Tried the FAQs but no mention of the removal of the cigarette lighter..

please help!

This is what is looks like....I'm trying to swap it over to a new trim panel...Should that white piece come out with the connector come out on top of it? What did you guys do??

I am able to pop it forward towards the front of the trim panel somewhat, but the harness piece catches and I can't remove it...I can also pop it backward, but I think the lip of the lighter holds onto the front of the trim piece...My gf needs the new panel, yet also needs the lighter for her phone charger.

I just hit mine out from the back. It has to come out towards the front of the trim piece, towards you if it was still mounted in the car.

Well I got it out....Simply yanking it out of the panel DOESNT WORK!! Like i said earlier because of the white connector in the back, and the light ring out front....

HERES THE SOLUTION:
Inside the metal housing of the lighter, are small square plastic tabs...take something small, and push these plastic tabs down, while pushing the housing out from the back towards you...this will seperate the metal cylinder housing, from the white plastic connector piece and resulting ring. After this...the plastic piece in back will seperate from the trim piece...

Now if only the search function worked...people can see this solution.
