Installing the garage door opener on a visor like the newer cars.

would this be possible?

On my 97 I have the 3 buttons up top, one is programmed for my garage, the other for the gate at my GF's moms apartments, and the other for our work door. Can this be installed on a 3rd gen? I would really consider doing this.

yeah, it just needs some wiring
I was thinking about this along with the sunroof controls from my dads 5th gen (not taking them, but since he got it). The problem i'm having is finding the parts cheap.

It would certianly be possible, but the only way I know to do it may sound sloppy to you.

I would just build a custom box to put on the ceiling of the car that would have a button on the outside that would push against the button on a garage remote placed inside the box. It would provide the same asthetic effect, and basically work the same as a factory one only the car would not be powering the unit.

You may even be able to remove the outer shell of this part from a 97 in a junkyard and use it to house the remote in your 3'rd gen.

Whatever you do I think it would be a nice touch to make the car a little cooler.

what you need is a homelink unit from any other car.
buttons can placed on a sun visor (something like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=46102 )

or you could get the whole unit with dome light and mount it in place of maxima's dome light (it shouldn't be that bad to find buttons with your right hand)

That homelink thing is exactly what I need. I would probably find me a spare Maxima visor that I can carve on to make it work. The only thing is what would it wire in to?

looking at the diagrams for the homelink transmitter, it does look like it's all internal so I think all you may need is power and ground
looks like the power wire for the maplights is an orange wire and black is obviously ground

Is that switched power Craigo? I need a power source for my Passport 8500. Was thinking of using the telephone power cords you can buy from Home Despot and hard wiring it into the map lights or sunroof control.

Sweet, sounds easy enough, so now I need to get the homelink visor and a spare visor for my car, just in case. And then try and run the wires through the roof.

The map lights wouldnt be switched power since they can be turned on when the ignition is off. It would make sense that the power from the sunroof is switched with the ignition since it only works when its on. You should just check to make sure that the detector wouldnt be drawing too much current- dont want to blow a fuse every time you open the sunroof

yup, Tim is right
constant power to the maplights (orange wire)

if it does start to blow a fuse (I wouldn't be too worried about it), it would be the 10A second from bottom on left side
