Speedo Problem

alright so today, i was trying to hook up 2 15" neons to the car. I wanted to wire the neons to the cig lighter. When I spliced open the green light to the cig lighter, and connected everything all, even grounded it, it didnt work. So I tried the cig lighter itself, and that didnt work either. I noticed something funny along when I was trying to test the neons. The speedo light turned on when the headlights weren't on. THen when I turned the headlights on, the speedo light would turn off. All the lights on the gauge cluster turns on. When I turned off the car, and turned it back on, the lights still didnt work, and this time the speedo light didnt turn on at all. Alright, so when I turn the car to acc, and the fuel pump starts, it makes that hissing noise, well if I turn my headlights on during that, it will make another noise... It sounds like that animal on star wars, the woobie?... haha i dont know... but yeah. I don't know what could be the problem, please help?

check your fuses in the kick panel:
"stop lamp", "room lamp", "lights"

Today I checked my car to see if it would crank over, and it doesnt. When I try to crank it, all the lights dim, and finally turn off.

Did you leave anything on, maybe? Perhaps one of the neons or a dome light??

nope. i turned off the dome light so when the door were open it wouldnt be on, but the neons weren't on, because i still didn't hook them up.

My dad and I jump started the battery, and I took a reading with a multimeter. The reading was 14.28-14.32.

But I have the same problem with the speedo, how the light doesnt work, but now, when I turn on the headlights, the clock will die out.

HELP!

Pull the cluster and start looking for a bad solder joint

Yup. You'd be suprised to know that even if one little wire is messed with or is spliced or anything, then it could cause a whole bunch of problems!!

then you gotta keep searching till you find the bad connection or part because it's there somewhere, believe me I've had 2 bad dashes on 2 other car (Legend and Blazer)
Cheap fixes just have to find the problem
not always easy

like, my dashboard just went out when I spliced the cigg. lighter. I did the green ring light around it first, and it blacked out my dashboard, and ac console, then I attached it to the cig lighter itself, and it still didnt work.

Man, that sounds sooo much like a short. Was all your stuff working BEFORE doing all the splicing? Let's go "root cause" first, and work ourselves out from there.

Hit me up on AIM once I get home and have access to my FSM - maybe we'll bounce a few more ideas around and see what we come up with.
