How much to replace front rotors.

I just need to know how much I should expect to pay to have my front rotors changed. I didnt pass inspection because my rotors had to be replaced. Midas wanted 300.00 to replace the rotrors and change 2 bulbs. How much is just the labor for replacing the rotors. I already paid for the inspection so I just have to go and get my second sticker put on when the new rotors are on so I may just let them do it. How much should I expect to pay?

Take off the wheel, remove the two bolts on the caliper (14MM) and the two bolts on the caliper web (also 14mm i think), slide the rotor off, replace. It doesnt take more than 1 hour, so I couldnt imagine a shop charging you more than $85

my car is 8 months overdue for inspection.... i need a sticker badly, and there is no way my car would "really" pass.
WOW 300 bucks! good god! even if that includes flushing the whole brake systme and new pads and new rotors 300 is alot of money for a brake job that could take u an hour and a half, and 120 bucks for all new pads and rotors
- do it yourself -

.. but if ur goin to pay, i guess find a cheep local shop that doesnt charge so much for labor .. thoes gues couldn't even mess up a brake job... piece of cake

Oh yes they can!! Most likely they won't, but still...

rotors are extremely easy to change. it's a 30 minute job for me to swap rotors on a stock Maxima..
you just need a jack, lug wrench, 17mm wrench and a C clamp to smash back the pads..

read the FAQs at the top of the page for a how-to on them.. EASY job.

You should be able to do it yourself, but since you aren't secure enough to tell us what state or city you are in, we can't point you in a certain direction (or offer to help). If it's too cold to do the work outside, especially if you don't have a garage, start calling local shops and ask them how much for the labor. You should be able to get in the $75-$100 no problem. Masssmail is probably right, MOST mechanics shouldn't screw up putting on new rotors.

OT -- I am glad I don't have any kind of inspection. I just send in $30 every two years and get new stickers. I never heard of having brake rotors inspected before, either. As long as the car stops, they shouldn't really care if the rotors are a little warped...

every 2 years here, if you go to a place that really looks at the car based on their checklist, they check rotors, pads, tires, ALL external light lenses (for cracks/chips), all exhaust, all car glass (cracks/large chips), all external bulbs, fluid leaks, check the e-brake for looseness/excessive stiffness, seatbelts, airbags, seat bolts, seatbelt bolts, horn, and severe structural rust..now, I only know of 1 shop that does that, and they got a piece of my mind when they told me I had to replace all of my oil pan seals because they saw some residue on the outside of the pan..the residue was from wind blowing while changing oil and missing the hole while filling it..I took it to another shop the same day and they stuck a sticker in the windshield and said "that'll be $7.50"..

Sorry about that OT rambling there..

I like the concept of inspections
But certain things are taken too far.
If a car is "unsafe" then it should ABSOLUTELY be pulled from the road until repaired.
A warped rotor doesn't make a car unsafe.
But a rotor that is too thin definitely does.
I'd love to see Illinois put an inspection program in place
or even better would be to enact a law that a car cannot be driven from the repair shop if it is unsafe to drive and the tags would be suspended.

Uh, no. I dont even have rear seat belts in my 89SE. I like the concept of inspections, but I have NO desire to submit myself to them. Fortunatly, Ive never lived in a state that does inspections. What states require them??

Of course you disagree.
You feel that you should be able to drive a car regardless of condition.
I should show you how bad a' shape some of the cars that come in for estimates are and the people drive out with them that way.
You would not want to be near these cars for fear of your life.

Took me about an hour and a half or so to replace the front pads & rotors on my car. Once you do one side, the other side takes about 1/10th the time.

Btw, I spent $110 or so on my front brakes & pads for my car.

I'd love to not have to get my vehicles inspected even if it cost a little more for the license..Missouri requires inspections
