90 SE Manual with noise!!

Hi All,
Just found the forum, and it looks like a nice place! I've got a 90 SE 5-speed, which I've had for about 4 years now...anyway after I got it, I noticed that the drive train is pretty darn noisy. There appears to be a "bearing" type noise(metal on metal) coming from the front of the engine block which I'm told is the distributor gear which meshes with the crank shaft (apparently they were treated with some type of silicon/rubber which made them quiet...which then wears off and gets noisy). I've also noticed the the transmission is rather noisy with a similar "bearing" type of noise..which is evident while driving at lower speeds when wind and tire noise is lower.
I was wondering if these are well known and documented issues for this car, as I've not had the opportunity to discuss it with other Maxima owners. Of course the other thing is: Is there an inexpensive remedy?
Other than these two things I LOVE my Maxima...it's a great car even after 11 years and 100K miles.
Thanks in advance.

Mine did this when I bought it. I was told it was the main shaft, a few hundred dollars to fix. The noise was even there when in neutral, so I took it to a shop. Ended up that the main shaft had worn down so bad it had destroyed my other gears, can you say "new transmission?" The total for the "rebuilt" tranny and clutch and labor was around $2,200. That was two years ago. I'd head to the shop and hope the whole tranny isn't gone!
