Looking at getting a Maxima ABS light on

I'm looking to get a Maxima and have come across a '93 SE 5-speed with 94k miles on it. The seller told me that the ABS light has recently come on and he has not had it checked. I tried looking on the forum for info but without the search function I fould it difficult.

Any info about the possible problem with the ABS or what I can look for would be helpful.

Also would would be a fair price for that car, the seller said it's in good condition, but there is a small rust spot behind one of the rear wheels.

Thanks for any help.

just curious, what color, and what about the interior? leather? what color? heehehe

I've been driving around with my ABS light on, I just need to clean my sensors. you can check for codes on the abs box in the trunk. I'll try to grab the FSM pages for you.

psst, buy it! VE 5spds are rare (especially sub 100,000mile ones )

if the price is right, buy it.
Because you can either fix the abs
or pull the fuses and bulb so that it is totally disabled and drive without it.
DO NOT however leave the fuses intact with the abs malfunctioning.

The car is black, not sure about the interior. I'm going to look at it on Friday. Sounds like the ABS issue may not be a big deal. If you could get the FSM pages for me that would be great. I'm pretty mechanically inclined and could most likely do any work necessary myself if needed.

The asking price on the car is $3000. I think that seems like a good deal.

I'm replacing my 1990 Acura Legend Sedan that just died on me, the car had about 230k miles on it and was mostly problem free until the last few months when it just was too much to fix.

Thanks guys.

its more than likely the abs sensor on one of the wheels. they seem to break often. downside is a replacement is over 150 dollars if i remember correctly. i took mine off of the front wheels since one was broken and i was doing a tranny swap. the light stays on but it doesn't effect braking at all (minus not having abs lol). if its a sensor you won't have to worry about it but you still want to look around incase it is something bad.

Thanks for looking for the pages for me.

Nope, never driven one. It's going to be my daily/winter car and I've heard really good things about the Maxima's. Since I had a Honda (acura) and currently have a '95 Toyota Supra, I want to try out a Nissan this time

I had a legend coupe 2 cars prior ro the max.
Very similar cars. IMO
and 3k seems kinda high for a car with an abs light on.
the abs problem if you want to fix it could just as easily be a module which run $$$$$
or do as I did on the legend and pull the bulb. I shoulda pulled the fuses too

Read up on the common Maxima faults before you go shopping-VE VTC noise, worn control arm bushings, rust infront of the rear wheels, blown bose radios and speakers, electrical problems, broken antenna. Look for accident damage.

There's the brake section of the FSM

Also with my own experience with a 2door Legend, they are alot heavier than the max, and less powerful. I also find the maxima alot(!!!) easier to work on (ever replace the stereo in the legend? wait until you do the maxima soo much easier).

Anyway, best of luck, and talk them down abit Then use the money you save for mods

internetautomar,

Thanks for the info. I'm going to try to get the price down a bit using the abs light as an advantage. If it turs out to be a bad sensor maybe fix it at some point, if it's the module then just disable it. I don't really care if I have abs or not.

MrGone,

Thanks for the pages. Yeah I've done quite a bit of work on the Legend and it is often difficult, glad to hear that the Max is a bit eaiser. If I get one I will be keeping it mostly stock since one you start modding it's had to stop, and I already have one car to feed my mod habit.

Well just got back from looking at the car. It had the grey cloth interior and no sunroof, but was in very good overall condition. Felt very solid driving and shifted very smooth. It has a new water pump, radiator, brake MC and he said all 4 window motors (I guess maybe it really was the regulators) have been fixed. He would only go down to $2850. I'm getting the vin number to run on carfax, and if that checks out I think I'm going to take it.
So it looks like I'll be starting '04 out as a new 5-speed VE owner :-)
