Tach quit working

Hey,
Last week my tach quit working on me, well most of the time it doesent move at all, then it will go crazy and jump around, then it will work for a few seconds, then jump around again, then sit there dead.

I had it looked at by the guy who replaced my transmission yesturday and he sais its not the pickup wire, its the instrument cluster. Which he quoted me $800 for a new one.

So my question is, can the tach be replaced without the rest? or is there another common problem where a wire comes loose? I mean i doubt its the tach malfunctioning as it wont move if your not moving, it only spazzes out when you moving and theres bumps in the road.

Thanks,
Andy
