Clock. Climate control and digital dash

Well I tackled all three problems on my sons 90 max SE today.Fixed 2 out of three not too bad. I pulled the clock, digital climate control and digital dash today.

I removed the clock and resoldered a couple connections, also changed the capacitor on the bottom just below the buttons. It seems to have taken care of the intermittent problem, You need to make sure you get like size capacitors because of clearance problems.

I disassembled the climate control. There are two solder Led bulbs that control Defrost and Fresh air, I did get the other bulbs from radion shack, make sure you keep the green rubber covers that are on existing bulbs, I did change 2 capacitors and the display is working all the time, not as bright as I would like but all the other buttons work now.

Not so much luck with the digital dash though, I did repair a couple bad solders joints. I was plugging in the dash for a test, the short plug in the middle was being a pain to hook up because of clearance. Soon as I got it hooked up, a big capacitor smoked underneath the the glass display. Their appears to be no way to get to it.

Any suggestions!

Mike

Just so you know you have GXE not an SE.
You seem like you can handle electricals tasks so you can do this:
The Digital dash can be swapped for an SE cluster or a GXE cluster. Just needs a good 4-5 hours tagging wires and splicing. Your fuel level will be off and maybe fuel low light may be inop (mine has never come on).
Make sure you get the analog connectors.

Thanks for the post Jim90GXE. I have rear drum brakes and a sonar suspension. I thought I had one of those fairly rare SE with different options. What is the absolute dead givaway difference between the two?

Mike

Do you have black or painted exterior mirrors? Painted == GXE

Any Chrome on the exterior == GXE.

Sound like your car has the same options of my GXE.

Dang, I pulled out my climate control to try to fix the fading display, and never got it fixed. I tried it about 5-6 times, each time resoldering all the connections in one section of the board. I also completely replaced that ribbon cable connecting the two boards. Which capacitors did you replace, and why did you replace them? When I fixed my clock, I replaced a capacitor that had a lot of corrosion on it. But I didn't see anything like that on the climate control...

Sup all....

Was reading the responses, and have a question...

You said you replaced the LED bulbs in your climate control...what were the part numbers? You said you picked them up from Radio Shack, right?

My electronic climate control buttons are dark, and I want to get those bulbs replaced...Kinda hard in the dark to know which buttons you are pressing.

Thx

The part number at Radio Shack is 272-1092 (And I think when I picked mine up, they actually said 272-1092C on them...). I put 13 of these bulbs into my car, in the climate control and various control switches and buttons. Go crazy. With a lot of them, the bulb is attached to a plastic thing that holds the bulb...You just have to unwrap the wires around that plastic thing, and rewrap the new wires from the new bulb. Also, many bulbs have a green thing (looks like a tiny condom). Just pull (or peel) that off the old bulb and stick it on the new one.

Good luck with those little green condom things! I doubt you can get new ones individually. In fact, when I went to a Nissan dealership, I was told I couldn't even get the bulbs individually - the guy told me to just buy a new Cruise Control switch and it'd have a new working bulb inside it!

Same here...Called a few dealerships, as those lights are not available. The only way to get them from the dealership is to but the entire unit (over $600). I told them I could continue to hit the dark buttons for free instead of dishing out that moolah.

Thanks rhecker. Im gonna go up to Radio Shack tomorrow and pick them up. Gonna be fun pulling out my dash in sub 30 degree weather this weekend. Planning on changing the speedo cluster's light from that nasty green to a blue while I am in there...
