Oil Change in a VG...
Just curious as to some of the methods used in changing the filter, as it is right above the y-pipe. First time I changed oil, I smelled it for about 4-5 days, burning off the exhaust. So, I started using a plastic grocery bag to totally cover the filter, and problem solved.
As long as we're on the subject, how many of you change your own oil and filter? I just started changing it again about 4 months ago after the price at the local fast lube went up to $26!!! That's crazy.

I've changed my own oil/filters for the past 20+ years. The only problem I had (before curbside recycling) was making the trip to the recycling area to properly dispose of the many gallons of used motor oil. But, over the past 5 years used oil is picked up as part of my neighborhood's recycling program IT'S GREAT !!!
I'd never trust any of my cars to someone who can either knowingly or unknowingly strip out the drain plug threads in the oil pan (let alone other damage). I've heard horror stories about Jiffy Lube or other quick lube places actually doing that. Still don't trust 'em.
Using OEM filters and Castrol GTX, it only costs me $15 and 20 minutes.

when the guy was putting the drain plug back in, he pried off the copper ring with a screwdriver, then proceeded to screw the drain plug back in with an impact wrench! He didn't even start the threads by hand! he just stuck the nut in the socket, stuck it on the pan and pulled the trigger!
Needless to say I bought a hot-mitt and am changing his oil at home now too.

They refuse to take used oil from me (even though they're required by law).. so I just drop it off behind their back doors when they're closed. heheh
The good oil
I have always changed my own oil and filter. Like the others who have posted I don't trust some of the "reputable" companies out there. My work 'hack' of a car I bought a year ago had a slight burning oil smell and dripped a bit of oil. The first weekend I had the car I found that the oil filter was screwed down and just free spun in my hand!!!
As for changing the oil, I do it when the car is warm (not hot), drain the oil for about 20 minutes then remove the filter, wipe away any oil drips and the replace the filter, do up the drain screw and then fill with oil.
Never had any problems with oil on the exhaust.
Brent.

actually years and years back popular mechanics had a write up on how to dispose of used oil in the ground. tells u how big of a ditch to dig and how much gravel to put in it and etc. they figures hey it came from there in the 1st place.
then yrs later they found out people were getting sick drinking the oily water..oops.
