i had an issue similar to this...but it was my o2 sensor.
here's what happened,
when the car was turned on and i tried to drive before the temp gauge was in the middle, the car would shudder and couldn't pick up speed. it would never stall but i couldn't go anywhere until my engine temps were up. but once the temp was up the car drove great.
i don't know if your problem is that close to the one i had...but keep this in mind if you examine the tranny and everything seems to be fine.

good luck

Yep if engine rev's fine in nuetral, then your tranny is going. Mine does the same thing in OD if I'm going up a hill on the interstate, I have to take it out of OD then its fine. I'm getting a new tranny in a few weeks. Course, check your fluid, if low that could be a problem, and if its burnt fluid then thats another problem.

Good Luck! Joe

my parents acctually just bought me this car from a dealership, b/c my sister crashed her other maxi pad.. hehe anywayz.. i gave her mine and now i got this! joy.. anywayz.. now that the OT sensor was mentioned im thinking it might be that because once the car warms up.. it drives fine... If a tranny is going bad does it drive like **** all the time?? because once this car warms up its pretty much fine..?? i checked the trans oil and its too the top.. so its not that.

how do you know if the fluid is BURNT?

you poor thing how much did you pay for yours... mine only does it in the cold.. i was personally thinking that it was a fuel injector.. but like i said once it warms up.. it runs.. ok.. im going to try to rev up my car in neutral today and see if it still hesatates.

for one did you check the fluid with the car runing or turd off

ITS SUPPOSED TO BE CHECKED WITH THE CAR RUNNING

smell the fluid on the end of the dip stick. if it smells burn which if its the original fruid it proboly will it needs to be changed and let me warn you that buy changing the fruid you run the risk of your transmission performing worse, not only have i read this on mutiple ocations but my moms auto in her villager (nissan quest VG30E) started slipping in overdrive and she had the fluid changed and tranny flushed and lets just say when she got the car back she no longer had a 2nd gear either and its pretty tuff driving an auto with only 1st and 3rd gear we had to red line 1st and then take our foot off the gas for about 5 seconds and wait for it to shift into 3rd. i put a used trans in it about 2 months ago it was 500$ there was 120k on her old one

i've been hearing way too much about these damn auto trannies. Everyone I know that has an auto has or had problems w/ them. Nissan really disappoints me w/ these trannies. Someone should write them a letter :-D lol

My car "stumbles" when I peg the accelerator and I did the self diagnose and it came up knock sensor, do you think that would cause acceleration problems? I have a 90 se 5 speed

When you stand in front of your car with the hood up it is on the right hand side below the battery. The back side of the engine (drivers side) is where the transmission is mounted. There is a dipstick that sticks out of it. Pull it out and look at it and smell it. It should be a reddish color and not smell burnt or be brown.

yes the knock sensor can cause stumbling problems

its located on the back of the engine and cost about 100$

I think there is a TSB out for our 'auto' trannies for something like this...it says the transmission temperature sensor can do this in the cold if its gone bad and once the car (and the tranny warms up) the transmission works fine...changing the tranny temperature sensor will take care of this problem. THAT IS> IF...your tranny isnt slipping!
