Upgrades

Hey ppl I am new to this forum and quite new to the maxima ownership thing I was given a white 91 GXE maxima around august of the summer of 2003 as a gift it had 178k miles on it and it now has gotten 181k on it i have I had muffler work done ($300), auto tranny rebuild ($1800), front disk brake pads replaced ($62 for pads) and I replaced them myself.
I now would like to make perfomance and appearance upgrades now that I have gotten all major repairs done. I need advice on affordable horse power upgrades and any other upgrades a maxima owner should not be with out also whether or not these upgrades are DIY or meant for a mechanic's hands. Also I am looking to get my car painted super white does ne 1 no of an affordable place to get it done?

Thank You

you were given the car? great. now sell it and get an SE 5spd with the VE. i already know someone will say that so i went ahead and said it.

if you keep it, get a CAI and hi-flow muffler. that's a good start.

I would say the same thing. I would suggest to add exaust, CAI, Y-pipe, Chip, Ground wires. I have a 1990 i would say keep it they are good cars.

it will cost you at least 1000$ just to get your VG to the proformance level of a stock 92 to 94 VE auto so i would do like recomended above sell that POS auto and get a VE 5spd then mod it.

if you want to keep your car ether do a VG30ET turbo motor +5spd swap (been done but not for the faint of heart) or in my opinion dont even bother doin performance work to it but if you decide to anyway a ypipe and intake are good mods

Head over to Warp Speed Performance and order a CAI and a mandrel bent Y-pipe. You will get a lot of performance for your money there. A high flow muffler will get some gains, but is mostly good for a more aggressive sound (the intake will give you that too). After that I would go with the ASP Underdrive Pulley (UDP).

Have fun with your max!

Bah... you don't need to make it faster.. you need to make it handle and stop better.

I don't think I said clear/read. You haven't made it yet, have you? If you have then that is fine. It will sorta match my red CAI.

yes, you are new to this forum.

i have been where you have been, have even posted such claims before, so i will not make fun of you for mentioning the port and polish and 3-angle valve job. i remember when i said those things. so i will not make fun of you. or flame you.

(polishing, btw, is effectively pretty useless)

sinister, you can do the valve job and porting, but i would wait to do that on an S14 or something else more worth it.

if you want practical modding without gigantic expenses, look at posts #2, 3, 4, 7, on here and start there. don't worry, you have plenty of time and plenty of modding ahead of you. including other cars.

also, get a book on building horsepower. typically those books cover the small block V-8. the knowledge is essentially the same for many engines. it will fill in the gaps in your knowledge and give you a good home-base. then you can know what all of these guys are talking about a bit more. and you will then learn faster.

for example, something i recently learned, not from a book, but from a swap meet social thing, is that it is popular to do 5-angle valve jobs. i was talking about boosting my KA24DE in my S14. it helped that i could understand, on a basic level, what the f*vck the guy was talking about. you will also be able to discern more clearly myth from truth. yet opinions will always exist.

You could do what I did. I went with a KYB/Eibach Suspension setup first, then a Warpspeed CAI, Y-pipe,hi-flo cat,B-pipe with a d.t. muffler, and then last I put on a UDP. I think next Imma do cams,a ECU upgrade, and some of Matt's suspension mods so I can really have some Miata fun !! lol

if you want a street devil swap a 5spd. lower the thing and maybe a intake. i doubt u want to deal with the ecu and engine performance on your own.

This is what i am doing. I am going to take the vg30e out of my maxima and put it in a s14 or a older datsun z. I plan to build about 500+ whp because this motor builds more torque and is a good motor to build if your going to do any type of racing, drifting. I plan to get a newer maxima because i love the body styles now, but the amount or lack there of ofsuspnsion upgrades for the 3rd gens have made me change my mind to doing any major upgrades to it. It is a great daily driver but i plan to get something else and make the motor my vision in something else.
