Timing CHAIN???

Guys....I have a 92 Max w/ the VE engine. Is it true that those come with a timing chain instead of belt? If so, what is the replacement period on those? Thnx!

EDIT: My WP leaks so I am getting it replaced. Should I just get the chain replaced as well? How much does the chain alone cost? (parts)

EDIT: I have heard that it's recommended after so long...wear and whatnot..

The chain should last the life of the car, so long as proper maintanace is done (ie. oil/filter changes). The only thing that should wear are the chain guides/tensioners, which can also last the life of the car. I've spoken to a few mechanics and they said they never heard of the chain needing replacement.

I hope you remember this when your VTC's start ticking, exhaust studs breaking, window regulators snaping, clock diming, door locks stop functioning, if they haven't already. And these are the normal expected problem

Water pump replacement isn't like on most cars that are timing belt driven. On the VE the waterpump is external and driven by the same belt as the power steering pump. I did mine in about 4 hours along with the thermostat and both radiator hoses.

And to those who like to complain about little things going wrong on their cars when they are 10+ years old lets see how well other car makes hold up after 10 years. I have 170k with no VTC noise (no rebuilds either), no exhaust studs have been replaced, and i have replaced all my window regulators and at 50 bucks a piece over a 3 year period i really cant complain. There is no such thing as a perfect car especially one with age. Well........the BMW E38 7-series is about as close to perfection as you can get.

Thanks Fashizl. Do you have any directions on how to do it? I have done some small mechanical stuff, but never anything of this magnitude.
BTW dude....your ride has one of the best paint jobs I have ever seen!

Ahhh, I hate the light blue stripes (came on the car when I bought it -- they are painted on and clearcoated over). The ones on the spoiler are soon to be gone. Next are the ones on the sides.

Dude replacing them are a major *****! Mine did have a problem. The bolt in the timing gear backed out. It put a hole in the timing cover, the gear came loose messed up the chain, the tensioner, and the head. I ended up replacing the engine.

It looks good on July 22nd when the temperature is 82F at about 11:34am with a slight NW breeze on a partly cloudy day. Thats when the pic was taken. The paint is all original and when you get up on it it looks good for an 11 year old paint job and it has plenty parking lot war wounds too. Looked reallt bad when i first got it 3 years ago. Ithad a red and grey pinstripe on it and that was from the factory!?!?!?

As for the water pump its a pretty straightforward job i believe someone has a writeup on the VE pump. I make my living working on cars all day so it was nothing to me but i remember that a lot of people have trouble getting the thing out of the car once its been unbolted. You can jack up the engine by the oil pan with a floor jack and a piece of wood (or something to distribute the weight across the oil pan. NEVER place jack directly onto an oil pan). The mounts have enough give in them to allow you to get it out. I forgot if it was from the top or the bottom but you get more room to get it out with.

Does the '91 SE also have the timing chain, or is it a belt?

89-91 ALL = VG30E
92-94 GXE = VG30E
92-94 SE = VE30DE

I noticed when you call the auto stores they get confused on the VE engines, most stores in my area dont have parts in stock for this engine. I changed the water pump and noticed that the VE engine has a chain instead of a belt. Thank God. The pump was enough.

whats the diff between a chain and a belt? well what i'm really trying to ask is why don't auto makers just use chains instead of belts since they don't need replacements?

Most parts store will not have the "VE" listed. They might have it listed as a VG30DE, just as long as they ask you "do you have a single or dual cam" If they ask you that question (regardless of what they have it listed as) 99% of the time you'll be getting a VE related part. Heck, even the dealer has the VE listed as the VG30DE. When I first started ordering parts at the dealer, I would argue and say it's not the VG30DE it's the VE30DE and some dealer parts counter clerk never heard of the VE.

Weight, and cost.
The belt wears out like your tires do.
A chain wears more like your door hinge.

Besides, whats the point of making a chain that lasts forever? Then Nissan dealers cannot force you to buy more and more parts from them...
We don't want "that" happening, do we????

Look in the FAQs for most of the Answers.
But here's a few to start
VE vg
DOHC vs SOHC
10:1 VS 9:1
190 hp vs 160hp
