Odometer Troubles

My mom bought a 94 Maxima about a year ago for me from some dood she worked with. He told us about some things we had to fix and we did since despite the crappy state it was in, we still got a pretty good deal.

The only thing is he didn't tell us that the tripometer skips. Sometimes I can drive for miles and not realize it's not moving, and because it doesn't move, the odometer isn't moving either. Because of this I've come to realize that maybe there's a lot of more miles on my car than what it says. I know I myself have put at least 500 or more without noticing the tripometer wasn't moving.

Eventually, after I fix it up a bit I plan on selling it, but I know I can't sell it if the odometer is messed up.

So my question is ... if I buy new guages and all that, is it true that computer keeps track of the number of miles so that if I install the new odometer it would tell me the correct mileage? Or am I just stuck with the number the old odometer reads?

you would be stuck with the old number, however, you can take it all apart and change it to the correct number. i did that on mine so i would know the correct mileage.

I think it is somewhat common on Maximas for the odometer to "take a break" occasionally. Which does suck for the 2nd owner. In my state, I think most cars older than 10 years freq are titled true miles unknown, just because a) the darn car is 10 yrs old 2) odometers break 3) lots of cars used to only go to 99,999 miles. So, I'd probably keep it as it is now, unless it totally stops recording.
