Try this one on for size. My 93 Mad Max (As in Crazy, not ****ed) has a very strange new problem. I have had a tick awile. Finally it got worse. I grounded out the VTC units. This made the tick go away. Now I have this sound like some one spinning a Ratchet in their hand. The strange thing is that it only lasts about 30 sec. Then it is quiet as a new car a few min then it starts all over. I just drove it today and thought all the noises where gone when it did this. In a 10 mile drive it did this atleast 5-6 times. If this keeps up htis thing will be gone and I will be the oine mad.......................
I already have plans to rebuild the VTC this week. If my local Nissan dealer can figure out what I need. I just want to know what more could be wrong with the POS.

broken studs don't rattle sporadically...open the hood and try and have a feel for where exactly the rattle is coming from...as in touch the manifold and try and feel for the tapping. thinking it might be a chain.

I stand by my guess LOL.
or maybe the coils are cracked / injectors making noise.

i test drove a ve 5spd that had an intermitant tick. im sure it was vtcs but the tick would come and go so it could still be vtcs.
i would rebiuld/fix the vtcs first and see if the rachet sound goes away. if not look in other areas

I say after he installed new/rebuild VTC's and if the noise is still there then come back and post his problem. VE's are known for there abnormal noises, from VTC's, exhaust studs, and just all those chains turning in the timing covers. It's hard for us to diagnose the noise problem over the internet, but I do understand he reasoning for trying. I thought I remember reading from some who have had their VTC's grounded for awhile only to have the noise come back couple months or a year later

Those are some really odd guesses........A loose vacuum line in the fan is really creative. It runs rough too, maybe a loose plug wire in the fan....HAHAHAHAHA.
It has a broke stud, That is a Totally Different sound. Its not a chain rattling on the cover
My wife is the only other person who I know that gets mad when I say POS. Does this mean we can't snuggle tonight????
Thanks for the responses I enjoyed them all. Noone knows the part number for the rebuild kits do they. That coould save me mindless chatter with the parts man while he scratches his uhhh.
