Cat vs Straight(test) Pipe

What are the advantages/disadvantages of having a straight pipe in instead of a high flow cat? ie gas mileage, vehicle wear and tear, etc.

Thanks for any help.

No advantages with a straight pipe if your current cat is in good running condition.

Well actually my cat was toast, so this morning I got a piece of straight pipe with flanges put in as a temporary fix until I picked up a used hi-flow cat from an .org member. But now i'm wondering if I should bother or just leave the pipe on. My main concern is gas consumption.

What I did was gut my cat, it gave mine a little throatier tone, and I felt a little diffrence in high end.

be friendly to the environment and put the cat on. You won't really notice a difference on our cars. Changing a y-pipe you will notice.

taking the cat off on a normally aspirated car will decrease your low end torque by quite a bit. enough that it is noticable. if anything, i would just get a highflow cat since your car is na.

yeah, on our cars a cat is better to have if you use it as a DD..my pickup had a cat with the first motor, and then when I changed the motor to an older one, it ran poorly with the cat, so I took it off and saw all around improvements, but it'll be a different story with a Max..

Okay, so the general consensus is to stick with a hi-flow cat?

Thanks for all the quick replies guys.

Hi flow cats don't really do much either if your current one isn't clogged. Really, hp on a budget for exahust is just to buy a good Y pipe. Then just buy a decent intake and you are 90% done with intake/exhaust. UDP would be the next logical step with decent gains.

well my cat was clogged, and i thought it helped out a lot. a descent straight through muffler is a good value addition.

www.warpspeedperformance.com $35 shipped.

Advantages:
about 1 tenth in the 1/4 mile.
more top end power.

DisAdvantages:
slight loss of low end.
slightly louder exhaust.
cannot pass emmssions (if you have to in your state).

Oh Well I have one of those now, as ghetto as it maybe. I guess i'll pick up a high-flow cat when the funds/ right priced cat becomes available.
