Nismo VG race heads are about $700 each i think...unless you are building a high-CR N/A race block, its not worth it

Yep, and those were bare. You had to supply your own camshaft, valves... and find a machine shop to put it all together.

What about porting and polishing the stock VG heads? I imagine you could pick up a set of used stockers and if you are any good with a dremel then gasket-match them and clean up the combustion chamber. Might be interesting to see results on that......

i dont think the gains would be worth the money

on the other hand if you milled the heads to get lets say 11:1 compression that would be worth the money

Japanese heads are known to be fairly clean to begin with. Not like most American V8 heads from the 60s/70s/80s. If you mess with the ports/combustion chambers with using a flow bench or some SERIOUS experience, you are more likely to hurt airflow not help it. Some VERY minor port matching is about all one could realisticly do diy.

yeah, but could the pistons and bottom end hold up to that? also might lead to detonation with out some octain boost.

also, would heads for a 300 z VG work on a maxima VG? all the same block and heads? are the 300z heads any better or was it the turbo that made the Z faster?

if i remember correctly the cams and such in the USDM VG30ET head are the same as the VG30E however the cams in the JDM VG30ET are different. they are euro spec which is supposed to add 10 hp.

What do you feel would be a reasonable price for the type of work?

had my VE heads out of the car ported and polished for 500 by a local reputable machine shop. Ive see some very sick cars roll out of there from vettes to trans-ams to mustangs to eclipses, 300/350z's, and one time only a killer lookin skyline. they do this kinda stuff all the time plus they were rebuilding them anyway for me so it was just a bit more work for them so i got away with a nice price....
