Buy a 4th Gen or Tranny Rebuild

I am asking this in the 3rd gen section because I want to know which is better for me to do. It's either I be carless for about 6 months or drop in a used tranny or get my tranny rebuilt. I would do a 5 speed conversion only if I can find a donor car in my area at a local junkyard. This whole week I have been debating to either buy a 95 or 96 or keep my 1990 GXE and rebuild the tranny. I am too attached to this car I have an idea of what I am going to do. I also want to know i typical prices of getting the tranny rebuilt or just having one installed (if I have a donor car). Post your thoughts please. If I do have it rebuilt then I will be driving within the next two months. That's a long wait.

hmm... let's see
newer car = 6 month wait
Rebuilt tranny = 2 mo wait
junk tranny = didn't specify.
Don't buy a parts car from a yard, buy it from a private party/dealer (yes I said dealer)
I'd just swap in a junk tranny, while I went looking for a parts car if I was you.

This is kind of off topic but what in the world is a 1992 Maxima VER? Oh yeah I like your deduction on all of this. If I do the rebuild I will try and get a 5 speed hopefully from a parts car. What's wrong with parts from a yard other than the part being the cause of it being there.

VE30de motor R-series

nothing is wrong with parts from a yard, I was refering to purchasing a COMPLETE parts car from them.
They usually want too much for a complete car.
I was by a local dealer and they have to 3rd gens sitting the back lot 1 se 1 gxe. they never did call me back about the se (It was a stick)

I saw one for 3500 but I am leaving for college in about 6 months and that is the reason why I am changing my mind about getting a VQ.

I'm in the same boat. I think I'm just going to swap in a 5sp from a '90 SE.
Transmission Rebuilt: $2200-2700
Swap in new Automatic Transmission: $1125 (parts) $550 (labor)= $1700
Swap in 5sp: (parts) $500 at most (labor) I'll do it!!!

No further questions you honor. The case is closed

I'm definately going to stick with my third gen but I already told my mother If I can find a 5sp parts car at either the junkyard or dealership then I'll be driving a 5sp gxe. I am paying for someone to do the install (I'm only 17 so I don't have too much experience). The tranny that I will swap will most definately be checked out before I install it so I won't put a dead tranny on my car. Plus I wan't to get a lightened flywheel

Nice! Don't go crazy with the new flywheel. I know of people that have put a full racing one to be cool and blew their tranny! Good luck and let us know what happens

A flywheel won't blow the tranny,
A clutch might.

I've seen trannys blown because of both. Apparently running a stock transmission and a stock clutch with a racing flywheel can really screw up the car

Good News!!! To get my tranny repaired it's going to cost me no more than $900. This is because it is beginning to slip but it is still in running condition. My baby is going to be burnin rubber in no time

how much u willin to spend?

if you have a lot of mods put into the car, i'd probably opt for looking into finding a VE 5spd, most of the mods should convert over... otherwise i'd get a 4th gen

Basically since I am leaving for college (University of South Carolina) this summer I am trying to just save the car I have now. The only things I put in the car are my rear speakers, HU, Smoked Clear Corners, Hyperwhite Bulbs in the clear corners. The car is perfect except for my foglights that don't work and the transmission. The tranny is going to the shop tomorrow and when I get back I am going to wire my foglights to my clear corners and do the all bright mod. I am also going to upgrade the harness for it so it can accept the extra wattage. Other than tha I'll probably get an intake. When I get settled into college then I'll consider doing other stuff.
