3rd gen stereo

I bought a new head unit for my (non-Bose) '91 today. I'm wondering what the "active speaker" system is and what problems I might run into with the new unit? Anyone know the specs on the stock non-Bose speakers (size, power ratings)? Suggestions for easy-fit aftermarket speakers?

Thanks

I'd go ahead and change out the stock stuff with some aftermarket ones. The rear are 6.75" rounds while the front door speakers are 4X6. Not sure on the specs of the stock speakers.

You don't have to buy 6.75" for the rear because most 6.5" speakers come with adapters that will make it fit 6.75" openings. As for the doors, James92se makes speaker pods that will let you put 6.5s in place of the stock 4x6 housing (if you want to go that route).

Thanks for the info, guess I'll start looking into new speakers.
I still can't figure out what the "Active Speakers" do. Was this just some cheesy marketing thing?

I'm also curious about the "rewired corner lights" in your signature file...?

Thanks again

eh, it was probably a marketing thing...something to catch the consumer's ears.

I rewired my corner lights so they're always on bright. Stock corner are dim unless you use the turn signals, then they become bright. Very simple rewire. Check out Craig Brace's site: www.geocities.com/craigbrace

Lots of good info there, as well as instructions on how to get to the speakers.

The active speaker BS is an amp under the rear deck for the 2 rear speakers.
Not sure if there is one for the fronts too.

Several years ago I replaced the head unit in my Maxima, and kept the stock speakers. If you do the same, you'll need to wire around (bypass) the stock speaker amps.
