91 Bose Swapout, Which years?

I have a 91 SE with a Bose system. I am relatively happy with it, except that the display on the Radio does not allways work and the search down button is missing. I have gotten by this by setting the presets and ignoring the display.

What I would like to do is replace it with a Bose unit from a later model. My question is which years will be a direct replacement for mine and connect directly to my existing wire harnesses? I suspect anything from 89-94 will work, but I'm not sure about newer models.

Does anyone have a 92-94 Bose Radio, Tape, CD unit they want to sell?

Also, has anyone had luck with aftermarket antenna replacements. I've given up on repairing mine.

Thanks
mike

If you care to, you can swap with a 4th gen as well, but you'll need a new harness.

Check the classified sections of this forum...ebay is a good source too.

I meant to post this in the 3rd gen forum. I have reposted over there.

How much of the harnes has to be replaced? Are you talking about an adapter that would plug into my existing harness? I'm guessing not. What does the harness consist of? Where does the other end connect?

You can use a 4th or 5th gen bose. You have to replace the female plug end (16 bucks @ Best Buy) The previous owner had my harness all messed up and Best Buy wouldnt touch it as far as installing it. I ended up installing it myself in about 45 min using info from this site www.installdr.com very good site for this type of job. It had the 85-94 and 95-present wire harness color codes on the same page and I just printed a copy and took it right to the car.I am not experienced when it comes to stereos, but am now! Havent had a problem yet and it's been in about 6 months now. Good luck!

Cd player is the biggest. You go from single din to double din when you do this. You lose your storage tray/half assed cup holder. I got mine from a 96 but I like the 5th gen radios because they look a little cleaner.

The harness best buy carries I thought was the one to connect the aftermarket radio to the factory harness.
To install the later radio 95 up
you need to replace the factory harness.
At least that is my understanding
I have those harnesses available

You are correct, you cut the factory harness off and wire up the best buy harness. Then plug that into the radio and you're good to go. That link I provided helps you match up the wires.

actually the 93 and 94 both had BOSE double din CD/tape/radio combos available and they'll plug right into the stock harness

as for the 4th gen models, you should get a female 4th gen harness and male 3rd gen harness and just match them together and that'll plug the new radio directly into the stock 3rd gen harness and you wont need to cut the stock wiring up. Check ebay for those pieces. I'm pretty sure about the male/female thing, but I could be backwards on them.
