glazed pads?

i was just wondering how do u know that you brake pads are glazed over? as of late my brakes make a odd noise but it doesn't happen all the time. i recently got the back drums taken care of and the noise stopped... but it came back not too long after... i think i may just need new pads for the front but not sure...

the drums are notorious for squealing all the time. I replaced the rear shoes three or four times over the first 1.5 years I had the car.. finally I broke down and pioneered the rear disc conversion. haven't had a problem since.
