There's a starter relay switch somewhere in the car. You'll have to check the wiring diagrams. I had this happen to me on a 90 maxima. I was going to sell the car and it only did it to me in cold weather so what I did was just wire up a manual starter switch. Take a lead from a hot wire run it to a push button switch. From the other lead on the switch run it to the starter engage hook up - the one you touched to get it to turn over.

This will solve your problem until you can figure out what is causing the issue. ps- it doesn't do anything for your resell value and also make sure you get a push button switch and not a flip switch. Otherwise, your wife may end up driving around town with the starter running the whole time. She only realizes this when she goes to start the car again. Good times.
