'89 Maxima GXE tranny bad
Hi, I have a '89 GXE maxima and the tranny has been struggling lately. The auto transmission itself is about 1 year 3 mos. old (rebuilt). Lately when I've been driving the car, it has trouble shifting into gears and the car revs and feels like it doesnt want to go. I have to kind of shift it around before the car goes. Anyways, I wanted to ask you guys what you think is wrong ? And how much is a good/regular price for rebuilding a transmission w/labor ? Thanks !

You already had one rebuild, right. Let's guess the price for that was $1000. OK. You have two options as of right now
1) Pay another $1000 for another crappy rebuild
or
2) Buy a tranny from somewhere (junkyard, dealership, or get a parts car) for around $500 and have that tranny installed. More than likely this tranny will have less mileage and run much better than the current tranny. Price fo labor will be around $500 too and your tranny might be around for another 5 years.
Which sounds better? I was going to get my tranny rebuilt but my father is having another tranny dropped in for about $100. All I have to do is find a compatible maxima.

I'd be surprised if it was a purely mechanical or electro-mechanical fault considering you've had the tranny rebuilt only 15 months ago. I'd suspect either an engine sensor (i.e. throttle positioner or similar), tranny ecu or your have a fault in the valve body or trans oil pump - if it is a tranny fault, it almost sounds like a oil pressure related problem. Also, can you be specific about the tranny not shifting up - does it happen between certain shifts (1-2, 2-3 etc) more than others? Does it happen more so when hot than when cool? And what does "shift it around" mean?
If the tranny needs rebuilding, I'd be going back to the shop that did the work the first time around because failure barely after a year is wrong!
