how long do brake pads usually last??

I've seen the posts about replacing brake pads, and it made me wonder if mine should be changed. How long do pads usually last (on average)? I probably have 20,000 miles on the current pads on my Max and haven't noticed any decreased performance. How often do you guys recommend changing them??

it depends on the composition of the pads and your driving habits.. the city/highway thing makes things a little different, but it's HOW you drive in the city and highway that matter.
I haven't had a set of pads last longer than 15k on my car, but I also drive it like a beast. My uncle has 80k miles on his 93GXE, and he said he's never replaced the pads since they bought it at 30k.
as for signs, you won't note decreased performance when the pads are dead- you'll hear them hit the wear indicators and make a nasty squeaking noise.. if not, you probably need to pull a wheel off and check.
FYI.. there's a hole in the top of your caliper where you can easily look in and see how much is left.

those are my rear calipers but the fronts are very similar.. note the oval hole in the "top".. that's what I'm talking about.
If your pads have less than 1/8" of material on them, then it's a good time to replace.
