anyone swapped in a VG from a Quest or Villager?

The timing belt on our 90 GXE broke. Engine and Transmission had about 180K miles on it and was running well. The timing belt broke when the car was going less than 5 miles an hour.

Instead of rebuilding, does it make sense to consider swapping in a motor from a Quest?

Does anyone know if this is a very straight forward swap to perform and what parts I would need from the Quest?

Can I just swap the long block in or is it better to swap in the engine and transmission from the Quest?

no, I think he's talking about the non-interference version of the VG30E that was used in the Quest/Villager

I dont know if anyone has ever done this swap before. I think that VG is rated a couple hp lower but it shouldn't be much difference in power.

that would be an interesting swap since it is a non-interference engine. i may look into that thing for turbo possibilities.

the VG in the max has a timing belt. and if that belt breaks the valves hit the pistons that's called an interference motor.
a non-interference motor is one where if the belt breaks the valves don't hit the pistons

It seems I have an "interference" wife. When she snaps, she hits me.

I want to trade her in on a non-interference wife. Is there a direct swap available? Preferably one with more hp.

oh wow... the bore, stroke, displacement, and compression ratio is different.

If the engines from the GXE and Quest motors are both designated as VG30E, wouldn't they both have the same or similar blocks, even if the bore/strokes are slightly different???

If the Quest motor doesn't fit, could my interference VG motor still be OK since my timing belt broke when the car was travelling around 5 mph? Or is it guaranteed to have some bent valves when the timing belt broke due to the interference engine design ?

you are pretty much guaranteed bent valves if your car was moving.

Here is a half-a$$ed attempt at understanding this stuff, hehehe

Maxima VG30E
3.43xPIx3.27x6=211.311324
Non-Interference VG30E
3.50xPIx3.14x6=207.0516

but Carpoint (err I guess MSN Autos, it used to be caled carpoint) says that the Non-Interference VG30E (2982cc, 9.3:1) has more displacement and a higher compression than the Maxima VG30E(2960cc, 9.0:1).

I need more sleep hehehehe

Hi,

the gas pedal on the max is light,

and the gas pedal on the quest is heavy,

the max has 160hp

182Ib-ft torque

2960cc

the quest has 152hp

192Ib-ft torque

2982cc

The Quest engine will fit - would have to change the oil filter pod. Someone on the .org has done a VG33 swap into a max about 6 months back (for a net gain of 8hp...). I say if you're gonna swap to a VG33E, you may as well bore and/or stroke it out to 3.5 liters & get some decent gains

BTW: Ford demanded that Nissan supply the non-interference engine hence different bore, stroke & compression ratios. The block is the same & would probably suit some light turbocharging (7-10psi).

The gains from the 3.3 are nice....just not worth the money unless you do a full head job and/or get FI.
