So I was really bored and I did this mod to my car. I haven't heard of anyone else doing it and I haven't seen it on any other car. Just thought I'd let everyone know about it. Here's a link

I wish...

I wish I had a digital camera. I'll see what I can do. I'm working on a pic for my signature. Maybe this weekend.

I know Jason F has a thing on his brake light that says maxima.org, and I think someone else did it with their front turn signals, but it's still a cool idea anyway

as far as making it come on and then get brighter, here's what you would need to do:
go to pep boys and buy a dual socket-shouldnt' be more than $3; it should have 3 wires going to it -1 ground, 1 normal wattage, 1 higher wattage; it will probably tell you which is which
run a wire from your back parking lights (wire should be red with yellow stripe before it goes through the harness to the lights) up the trunk hinge and take off the trunk liner on the trunk lid
run the wire through the grommet for the current 3rd brake light wire
the current brake light wire should be hooked up to higher wattage wire of the new socket; the ground is the same; lower wattage is hooked up to the wire running from the parking lights

the only problem might be getting the socket to fit where the current socket is, but I figure it's probably gonna be pretty close to the same size so some silicone or glue or something would probably be all you need

I haven't actually looked at this, so check this info yourself to confirm it if you're gonna do this

sounds complicated...

I'll look into it, but it probably won't happen till one day in the summer when I am bored. Thanks for the detailed description though.

Just my input.

Sound's good. I did a similar thing. I took the wires from the centre light on the back dash and moved them to the center of my trunk lid where the clear plastic with the Maxima Logo is. Mine was broken and I had to fix it somehow, so I just went to my friend and he made a piece of plastick whith the Maxima logo on it. Every time break the light goes on The MAXIMA name comes on in red. I had to use different bulbs so they would fit, I also lined the inside with a reflective matterial so the light distributes evenly.

I love that idea!!! i thought about that but using a neon light, but regular ones are cool too, do you have pics??? i need to see how that looks.. how easy was it to do, and it required a whole new plstic insert in there? hmm i was thinking about how to do that mod, and make the third brake light be in between on that section of the trunk lid. heh pics pics pics!

I have no way to put picks on line I don't have a camera or a scanner or anything. I spend all my money on stereos and mods.

craig,

can I do this with sidemarkers somehow? i want them to remain dim when my lights are on, and turn bright when I am signaling.

thats a really good idea and now i know what i am doing tomorrow. i am always lookin into little cheap cool inexpensive do it yourself mods for the max. now, does the light come on and glow the outside of the word maxima or does the light come on glow up the actual words maxima. what i mean is that light,m,light,a,light,x,light,i,light,m,light,a or is it all black around and the only light is maxima. sorry to be confusing but its hard to explain what the hell i am tring to say, sorry...lol

I don't see any reason why not; it's just a matter of getting the new socket to fit, but you should be able to do it
lower wattage wire goes to parking lights; higher wattage to blinker

Nodoubt has good point, does the light show around the word MAXIMA or does it actually glow MAXIMA? I'm gonna do this tomorrow, so I'm probably gonna try both ways.

wait you know what? It says on the website
"Goal: To black out part of the high mounted brake light so that it reads M A X I M A in red when the brake light comes on." so the thing is to ge the maxima part to glow red. i'm gonna do it both ways anyhow and I'll get some pics up tomorrow.

Yeah I did this same mod except i cut the word MAXIMA out of a piece of black vinyl and glued in on to the brake light. It looks really good. But unfortunately I dont have a digital camera either so I cant currently post a pic.
