I think my tranny might be toast...

So today I put my lowering springs on, changed my tranny fluid (Royal Purple) and did the Free STS mod...I drove my car around for roughly 10 miles. Well I went to go into second gear and it locked out of second gear. I pulled onto my street and my car started making a clunking sort of noise that sounded like it had something to do with the rotation or something and then all of a sudden it made a big pop...I checked my axle, wheel bearing, tie rod, all that good stuff. So I finally drained my tranny fluid, there where tons and tons of small metal shavings with several pretty big chunks in there , I strained the fluid and put it back in and drove it around and it seemed better but every now and then it makes the clunking so I'm hoping maybe just a small piece of tooth broke off and there is just some small pieces left up in there that need to be drained out. I'm going to drain my fluid again tomorrow and probably just by some cheap stuff that's fresh. I just really hope that it's not something to the extent that I will have to buy another transmission.

Not sure if that was the best idea lol, but regardless, I'd start getting some quotes for a rebuild and get it done before it totally craps out on you and leaves you stranded. I had my 01 tranny rebuilt and it cost $2250 out the door

New trans > rebuild.

If it comes down to you needing a new trans, a lot of 5.5 guys are running the 6th gen 6MT with HLSD. It's got a shorter final drive too I believe so it could get you into the 13s

So I'm pretty sure I'm gonna need to buy a transmission now and I think I am going to go back to my original idea of using the Sentra SE-R Spec-V transmission. Now from what I remember, all I need to do is swap my bellhousing over and that's pretty much it. And the only difference is that it has a shorter final drive. So has anybody figured anything out with this idea since the last time I asked??? Thanks.

Will it be able to handle the same input torque? I've seen a place online that a had a bunch of 04+ manual 6speeds all under $1500 with less than 60K miles. Rebuilds arent worth it unless you are rebuilding it yourself, since for another couple hundred you can just get a brand new one.

The cheapest 6-speed Maxima transmission I have found on car-part was $600, whereas the SE-R 6-speed $385 for a 60,000 mile one. Guys with the Spec-V's with VQ35's seem to handle the torque so shouldn't I???

Just hope that the bellhousing of your current trans wasn't torn up by whatever failed.

It should handle the torque just fine, considering most of the parts are the same internally.

Alright, just wanted to let you guys know that I will probably be the first person to put the Sentra SE-R Spec-V HLSD tranny in my 5.5gen Maxima. I was just on Nissan4U.com and the part numbers for the casings are the same as well as many internal parts. Also looked at some clutch alignment tools and they where the same for the Spec-V and the Maxima tranny so I'm assuming the input shaft is the same. From what I've gathered all I'll need to do is swap my tranny out with the Spec-V one and keep my bellhousing/linkages and whatnot. I haven't been putting any real strain on my car since the problems with the transmission started (I haven't even been driving it) so I think my bellhousing should be fine. But I will probably be picking up the transmission this week and trying to install before the weekend is over. I'll keep you guys updated.

It's been done a few times already, IIRC. I know I've answered some questions for a few people that were planning on doing it, anyway.

SurraTT has already swapped out Spec V internals into his 5.5 bellhousing. Cost him about 200 bucks here at a local tranny shop to do. Drives great, revs fast.

I just read his thread and I'm starting to have 2nd thoughts on this. Looks like he ran into some trouble with the gears and a few other little things. Also he ended up paying what he would have for just the 5.5 gen tranny to begin with. But IDK...I guess we'll see.

Drop the caps. No need to yell.

The information is all readily available, you just need to search for it. There was a thread comparing the gear ratios, maximum possible speeds, etc.

Also you are aware that this has no relation to your A32 unless you swap in the 6MT, correct?

when you're doing a transmission fluid exchange I'm pretty sure that you're supposed to switch it over slowly. By this I mean take a little fluid out, and add a little more in until eventually you get the color you want. If you do the transmission over 100,000 miles and you do it too fast, you run the risk of destroying your gears... for future reference.

Really? Was thinking about changing my fluid this weekend and I hadn't heard this before. What's the rationale behind that?

There is none. With a power flush, I could see issues. With a drain and fill, there's really no problem.

The poster also seems to be unaware that this thread is about the 6MT, and not automatics.
