94 MT tranny fit in 92 SE???

I've recently purchased a Maxima from a friend of mine for $250. I it really need was the FR passenger door change ( from a nasty crash ) However the car is an automatic. I've driven a manual forever!!! There's nothing thats wrong with the car engine wise...but i would like to change the AT to a MT. I was wondering if a newer year Tranny would fit or should i stick with my year. There's also the question of price and what kind of internal change that has to be done to the car. Hopefully when i am done with his new project that i started i can start posting up some pics.

Thanks,

If you have a 92 SE, you have a VE30DE engine, which is DOHC. You need to get a manual tranny from another 92-94 SE with the VE engine. I think during those years all SEs came with VE and all GXEs came with VG (SOHC). Anything before 92 won't work for you.

There are some other items that you need to get to make the conversion, but I don't recall exactly what they are. I am thinking maybe ECU and some other electical stuff (aside from the third pedal). I am sure I am missing things, since I haven't done the conversion myself.

Good luck

chris

well lets just say its probably gonna cost alot more then the $250 you paid for the car, unless you go to a junk yard and get a parts car which will probably still be more then the $250. heres a link that may or may not be of help.

You do not need to swap the ECU/wiring harness to go to a 5spd. The difference between the Auto and 5spd ecu is the 5spd one has the ability to control the Variable Intake, and the auto one has the ability to control the automatic transmission. If you do swap in the Variable Intake Manifold from a 5spd VE then you'll want to swap ECU's.

You'll need:
-Transmission (clutch fork/boot too)
-The 8? bolts and 2 nuts that hold the tranny to the engine
-5spd tranny mounts (2)
-slave cylinder
-line going from the clutch master cylinder to the slave cylinder (a front brake line works )
-clutch master cylinder
-5spd brake pedal assembly
-clutch pedal assembly
-Shifter assembly
-Shift rods (there are 2 of them)
-Shifter surround/boot
-axles (I believe you can reuse the passanger axle but will need a 5spd drivers, not 100% sure)
-flywheel (and the bolts as the flywheel is alot thicker than the automatic flex plate, so grab the bolts from the 5spd. If you buy a Fidanza it will come with the 9 new bolts that hold the clutch to the flywheel, but you will need the 8 bolts that hold the flywheel to the engine).
-clutch disc/pressure plate (Stock non Key Value kit, Exedy/ACT/Spec/etc aftermarket)
-throwout bearing (NTN makes a good one, most aftermarket kits come with the NTN)
-5 quarts of gear oil (I like Amsoil, seems to work the best with the VLSD)
-5spd starter
-Axle Seals

I'm probably forgetting some stuff. Just get as many bolts as possiable.
Some other stuff that you should have for the install:
-Locktite
-Lithium grease
-body/drivetrain grease/lube, I just have a tube of it, use it on bushings and wheel bearings and stuff, its a multi-purpose lube for most imports.
-Torque Wrench
-10,12,14, and 17 sockets and wrenches; 21 and 36mm sockets.

Id recommend swapping the ECU and wiring harness. Might be more work/ a pain in the **** but it saves some of the problems you'll have with your reverse lights and cruise control. If you do it this way you will want to change the intake manifold (VI) also as your check engine light will come on about 80 miles down the road.
