Automatic Transmission Problems

91 Maxima. Driving home last night and stopped at a stop sign. When I took off again my Automatic Transmission seemed stuck in 3rd gear. I can put the car in Park, Reverse, and Neutral and they all work fine. Drive, 2nd, or 1st gear the car seems to stay in 3rd gear. When I take off the car will slowly get up to speed and at around 70MPH the RPM is about 3500. Also the speed odometer quit working about a week ago. Please help.
speedometer cable is connected to your trans.
sounds like you need to check your speedometer cable(be carefull not to break it), it's located runnung from the speedometer, down the dash under the steering wheel, to your transaxle. REmove the dash where your knees go when in the drivers seat, and check the cable, if broke, remove the hold down bolt on your transaxle, then remove the other end from the back of the speedometer( be very carefull you might not be able to reach it depending on your hand size in this case dont risk it just remove the cluster and connect the new one before reinstalling, this will prove to be time consumeing be patient , get a bag and crack a ewsky
I recomend you have it looked at, most places will change your fluid, filter and adjust the bands for under 50$, if you can do it your self the filter is 13$ at napa and comes with gasket,be sure to torq bands accordingly
The ECU has put the transmition in safe mode foor some reason. Try turning off the car, letting it sit for a couple of minutes then turn it back on. If it stays in third gear then you deffinatly want to get your trenny looked at. If it runs fine I wouldn't worry too much about it, get it flushed. The ECU can do this from time to time.

Filter? The last time I took my 91 SE to a dealer for transmission service, they just opened the drain plug, drained the fluid, and replaced the drain plug.
The dealer explained to me that there is no filter on these cars (only a mesh screen).
Which filter r u talking about?
