Throttle Position Sensor Bad ?

How can i tell if this sensor is bad or on its way to being bad. When it is cold my car will not start unless i hold the gass down for a few minuets to get it going....and the car should have a fast idle until it warms up but it doesnt, so it wont continue to run unless I hold the gas as mentioned before...kinda defeats the purpose of having a remote start on it. It has always done this when it gets cold...tune up or not. Will this sensor cause this ? Tell me what I can do or some things that I can check.

IAC is the first thing I'd check.

Is that the valve looking deal that connects to the intake tube and throttle body. How do I check it to see if it is working correctly ?
