my 93 maxima dying down

I have a 93 Max GXE with 165K on it.A week back I was in a hurry and drove it like rough, kindda sports car style with sudden stop n go,which I generally don't do.
Next day the car during driving when I was slowing down and was at abt 30mph , it started this hiccup kindda thing, the rpm went down from 1700 to 700,then shot up to 3500.When I pumped more gas it jumped to abt 4500 rpm and then but the car car did'nt seem to be getting up much.
Then on the red light it died down. But it got restarted and i could slowly drive it home. Now in one week it has done it twice again and every time its after I try to drive it a bit rash, if a slowly give gas and slwowly bring it to stop ,no problm. Also every time I am on a stop sign, the engine rpm spikes up from 750 to abt 1200 before coming to a stable idle of 600.
I have owned it for last one year and have even driven it 400 miles out of state, no problems before. I don't have any clue as to where to start from , could it be fuel(I put 89 octane always)/mufler/belts have no idea.
Any help is more than welcome. Thanks guys for your patience.

I'd check the basics first. Spark plugs, wires, connectors, vacuum lines. I wish I had more to tell you but thats where I'd start.
Good Luck!

If those parts all seem good, then I'd bet it's electronic, either the coil packs, ignition module, or the MAF. I'm brand new to Nissans, I'm not sure how their MAFs respond, but with the engine idling, tap your MAF with the butt end of a screwdriver, and see if the idle changes, or it causes the engine to die. This will be a sure sign that it's acting up. Your problem certainly sounds similar to MAF problems I've had on past cars.

oooo man yesterday was a mess. It snowed in detroit and i had to drive home in snow with cars crawlong on the road. I moved 1 mile in 20 min. Thats it my max behaved the worst, the rpm kept on jumping between 500 to 1500 randomly, No problem lights flashed on the dash. It was like always on the verge of dying, and it did die twice. Then I restarted , without any problem . Slowly I could reach home. Somebody please help ! If anybody has any suggestions please go on.

Thanks credence I would try the MAF stuff that u wrote if only I knew what it stands for....Sorry I am totally new to this.

Are you getting a check engine light? If so you can take it somewhere and get them to read the codes and they might point you in the right direction. Usually autoparts stores can check for you (ie: Autozone). Good Luck!
