new owner of 93 GXE

I'm new to Maximas and Nissans in general. I just picked up a 93 Maxima GXE on saturday. It only has 75,019 miles on it. Only one owner before me. I paid $3500. I'm wondering if that's a good deal?? The carfax report is clean and confirms the mileage. I live in Hawaii, so cars that old with that many original miles are common (because the island is small).

I really wanted a 94 SE with 82,000 miles on it, but it was sold the day before I got to the dealership.

Anyway my GXE is maroon, and has some fading on the front and back bumpers, and a tad on the front hood.

The only problem with it is the back brakes 'creak' a bit when I stop. Is this normal? Easy fix? Everything else works like a dream. It drives so smooth and nice, I've been extremely impressed. The timing belt was replaced in 2002 when the car had 68,000 miles. That's about all I know of the maintenence records. Everything under the hood looks to be in great condition. This car was really well taken care of.

Nice to be here, thanks for your time.

The creaking sound in the back could be anything, you say??
In addition to braking normally while driving, when I put on the parking brake I hear a slow creak, that's
why I assumed it originated with the brakes somehow.
What are some other possibilities?
I'm not all that knowledgable about car mechanics and such.
If I hit the brakes hard there will be a slight squeak, but that's
fairly common.

thanks.

Replace the rear brake shoes, mine had the exact same creaking sound while stopping... Completely fixed by replacing the rear shoes.

My brakes always seem to squeek. But they were having some serious squeel, city bus style. Turns out one of the rear drums/shoes had a crack. After replacing, it is a lot quieter, though I still have some front brake squeek occasionally.

I agree with jaguax, replace your brake shoes. There is some stuff you can put on the contact areas on the backing plate that might help quiet things down too. I can't remember what its called right now but it is like a silver grease, maybe someone else known the name.

It could be uneven wear on the pads. Happened to me.

I forgot to reply to this. Well I took it in to my mechanic, and after seeing the state they were in, I got a brake overhaul on the back drum brakes. They were leaking and worn to hell. I also got a much needed brake flush. After all that the brakes work beautifully and I can stop on a dime with no squeaks or creaks whatsoever. My front disc brakes are fine, and I don't need to replace those pads for awhile.
