auto to stick ?'s & how to launch w/auto?

hey, has anyone done an auto to stick conversion? i'm looking into doing one because launching in an auto sucks. about how much would i be looking at (parts & labor) to get it converted over by a shop?
Also for all you with autos...how do you launch? a friend of mine keeps telling me the best way to launch in an auto is a neutral drop..but i know that is hard on my tranny and i don't wanna blow it. i guess my friend is lucky, he neutral drops all the time in his max and he still hasnt blown his tranny, lol. when i launch i usually just stomp on the brake and rev it to 2000 in D and let go of the brake but it doesnt help me launch much better than just stomping on the gas... sorry if any of these are newbie questions.

Neural Drop is bad. The 1990 MAxima's have a weaker tranny than the 92+ max's. Best bet is to hold the brakes rev the engine up to 2k RPMs then press the gas as hard and fast as you can. I know this can also kill a tranny but it's a little easier on it.

I highly advise you smack your friend for his neutral drop advice. I wouldn't even do that in a fully built C6/727 or 46RE/TH400 or 700r4/etc.

Personally I wouldn't even bother power braking, Just jab the gas pedal when you want to go If it means anything, thats how Aaron does it (aaron is a crazy 1/4 mile sob... has an auto).

For the 5spd swap, it isnt really difficult, IMHO the hardest part is sourcing all the parts. I would recommend you use an aftermarket clutch though, by the sounds of it, I dont think a stock clutch would last very long.

to do the conversion is not hard just get the parts needed. im doin' the same to my car and all i need right now is the clutch, axles, hubs, and tranny.

Thanks for the props.

Nismo90, the best way to launch an automatic for maximum torque to the wheels is to shock the tranny as much as possible. So, lets say you are idling at 750rpm, do not stall it up... just suddenly stomp on the throttle and it will cause the torque converter to flash as high as possible and to cause the torque multiplication to spike causing you to have more torque multiplication further down the track.

If you torque brake or launch off idle, you probably wouldn't find any noticable differences. I always launch off idle ever since I got my high stall torque converter. But when I bracket race, since reaction times are very important, I stall up the car and launch it for the most consistant way to cut a light.

But, PLEASE smack your friend for telling you to N drop your car. If you did that, I would seriously think your tranny would blow up after about 3 times of doing that. You friend's tranny WILL die prematurely. Count on it.

I have hubs and axles for you The DS axle is only about a year old...not sure bout the PS but all boots are still good and no noise. Hubs are good. No noise out of 'em. Lemme know if you are interested

$100 +shipping???? Does that sound good? If not, we might be able to work something out. Either PM me or add me on AIM sometime and we can probably work something out.

When doing the conversion you also need to change axles and hubs?

u dont have to change the hubs unless u use a tranny from a dif. year and there for dif. axles too

the convertion isnt worth it UNLESS u have all the tools and lifts,

-if u race ur auto it will fail...THE END

What if I use a the same type of engine car VG to convert to my VG. Did they change the axles and hubs for an 89-91 max?

Found a good site that speaks of doing the conversion. The car they used was a fourth gen so some thing will be a little different but most of it is the same. Fast Maxima.com
