Funny you say that, because i have scratched a whole bunch of thos lines/wires with my snowboard by putting it in th e back seat and driving like mad!!
so i would assume that once i mend those broken lines together my static should go away..
thanks alot jeff, i think your on something.

like james (jeff?) said, Nissan uses a 'dual-diversity' antenna system
this means there are actually two antennas - the normal mast one at the back passenger side of the car and the one built into the upper part of the rear windshield
If you look at the windshield, you will see where the pattern changes near the top, that's the antenna part. You might have damaged it and/or the defroster by scratching it. They have repair kits for the rear defroster lines at Pepboys and other car places.
Also, with your aftermarket radio, someone may have installed it the lazy way and not used an adapter for the antennas. There is a 2-1 plug adapter that should be used to combine both antennas to plug into the single spot for most aftermarket stereos. I've seen some places just cut and splice new wires in for the antenna and that's not always a good thing to do.

better reception - I believe the BOSE system would take both inputs in and choose whichever signal was stronger, but for aftermarket ones with the adapter, it just combined the signals
on my old 89GXE, the mast on the regular antenna was broken but still got pretty decent reception from the window antenna
