Push Starting a 5spd with auto ECU, hmmm
I was talking to KLoWn and he said his car is done, but the battery is dead. I said why not just push start it and he said it wouldn't work because he has the auto ecu in his car. He had been told it wouldn't work because the ECU didn't have that feature, but I thought it was strange because I never thought of push starting a car was a feature, more or less just a handy trick that works because of how a car works.
Anyone have any experience with this? I might swap in my auto ECU to see if it works if no one knows.

I am not sure how the ECU would matter when push starting a car. Did he try it? I wouldn't think that the computer would be able to tell how you are starting the thing. Like you said, I thought it was just how a car operates, not anything computer related.
please enlighten me on this one --

it doesnt matter...all it does it turn the motor over when you dump the clutch. If the car is "ON" then it will crank. I see no reason why it wouldnt. All a starter does is the same thing except with a motor instead of dumping the clutch on a moving car.
The trick is that you have to have the car in the ON position. I remember trying to help a friend jump his and after a couple of times and it didnt start I asked if he was sure the car was ON and he said oh I didnt know I was supposed to turn it on...DUH!!!.
anyway I see no reason why it wouldnt start.

You'd have to get it going pretty damn fast. I've shut off a couple autos before at speed when no one was around, to see how well they could steer and stop in a no power situation. Considering they were in drive at the time, and the fact i turned the ignition on again, with them still in drive, and rolling, and nothing really happened, I figured the torque converter was taking the load in all cases. Modern transmissions have a fluid pump driven by the engine, whereas older transmissions (from the 50s and such) had pumps driven by the wheels, therefore given enough speed, the fluid action could spin the transmission and turn the engine over. Maybe you've had different experiences...
By the way I wouldn't recommend this in most of any driving situations, I was just screwing around, when it was quiet. Like when you're on a highway, and you see how far you can go in neutral...junk like that. I think that's illegal anyhow...so yeah....I've never done that...noooo.....can't prove anything...LOL!
