Transmission causing non-working Speedometer

Hi, My speedometer/odometer are non-working. I took it to 2 mechanic's they both told me the transmission in it is a aftermarket transmission that had cable control for the speedometer(im assuming the odometer too) and my 89 Maxima SE use's electronic controlling. They basically said I'm screwed. They won't be working untill I replace the transmission(It was replaced, new.. by the previous owner) So that's not an option.

My question is:

Is they're anyway to add a aftermarket speedometer controller by cables, Like how you see the people with the huge tach's sitting on they're dash, Or is they're anyway to rig up the current speedometer to work with the cables. Thanks!

Uhhhh, most likely those mechanics are full of crap.. you can't just throw in an aftermarket tranny and the car works...

most of the time, the problem part is the speed sensor. it's what takes the rotational signals from the tranny and converts them to electrical signals for the gauges to read.
it's about $60 from the dealer.
I highly suggest taking the car to a NISSAN mechanic and have them check it out, not a regular mechanic that says they'll work on Nissans. big difference.

Well I thought about it being the speed sensor(before I even took it to the machanics) But, the ODOMETER is non-working too, aren't they both on he same cables on the transmission?

odo and speedo use the speed sensor for inputs.

the only way i could think of it being a cable controlled setup, on the tranny, is if it were from the 2nd gen Max but even then i don't know if those used electronics or a cable. i think those mechanics have no clue what they're talking about.
